Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

Welcome to the ICC Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

The Code Council has revisited how best to provide an online, professional Discussion Forum and area within the website that has a sense of community – where Members and nonmembers can provide input and exchange ideas with their peers in the industry. The new Codes & Standards Discussion Forum does just that, as it allows Registered Website Users and ICC Members to discuss the I-Codes in an online community.

NFPA 13 has a requirement that sprinkler heads shall be protected from mechanical damage. You can use guards, shields or cover plates. Also, the sprinkler can be of the recessed type as long as the entire assembly is listed of course.

References:

NFPA 13 (1999) section 3-2.7.2 and 3-2.8
NFPA 13 (2002) section 6.2.7

they make a institutional sprinkler-but this just prevents the prisnor from hanging himself.
if you can locate sidewall sprinklers outside the cell & they can spray into the cell
this is what we have approved in the past

RCW 19.27.060:

(6) The provisions of the state building code may be preempted by any city or county to the extent that the code provisions relating to the installation or use of sprinklers in jail cells conflict with the secure and humane operation of jails.

have never heard of a code requirement that they HAVE to be protected.

institutional heads are very suggested, and they still get played with,

but the wet rat look is very becoming of some people, and than you hit them with a citation for tampering, and the pd hits them with crimminal mischief for the cost of repairs, so in the long run it works out.

Now under mental holding areas there may be some provisions.
