The Goal of SMARTcodes:
Automate code compliance checking for the I-Codes and Federal,
state and locally adopted versions of those codes, leading
to:
- enhanced communication, knowledge and collaboration
- more complete code complying designs

- more timely design acceptance and approval

- improved building safety and performance

- reduced construction costs

ICC efforts to date:
- Invested in SMARTcodes project
and support for buildingSMART
- Created robust project plan to guide ICC efforts

- Assembled ICC project team of ICC staff, private sector
experts and public sector users
- Established a task group of federal, state and local officials
to guide project

- Developed a unique process, protocol and software to create SMARTcodes

- Created SMARTcodes for 2006 International Energy Conservation Code® (IECC)

- Collaborated with other buildingSMART
initiatives and interested parties

- Demonstrated auto code check, manual code search and support
data "drill down" for 2006 IECC
These efforts resulted in the introduction of SMARTcodes, the foundation for automated code compliance checking in the U.S., on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006 in Washington, D.C.
Presenters demonstrated how a real building plan, as represented by a Building Information Model (BIM) can be automatically checked for code compliance to the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code. The demonstration also included a manual code search to address specific code-related issues when a BIM is not available.
The manual code search allows the user to ask specific questions
about the International Energy Conservation Code and
drill down through the code to reference standards, code commentary,
and code interpretations by code section, as well as product
listing directories that go directly to manufacturer's product
information.
The automated code compliance check takes the building plan as represented by a BIM, and instantly checks for code compliance via model checking software. The user can choose several options to output the results, printing out the sections of the code that apply, an inspection checklist of things to look for, or viewing the building in 3D as a virtual walkthrough that shows the building components that don't comply with code and why.
SMARTcodes work on the
concept that is known as "interoperability." To
be interoperable means to share and use information across
various interests and disciplines. In this case, the use of
information technology will help building departments deliver
more efficient and effective public services and enhance public
safety. It will also help designers, specifiers, contractors
and others more effectively address code related issues. The
benefits are enormous.
ICC is developing SMARTcodes in coordination with the buildingSMART
alliance, a Council of the National Institute of Building
Sciences (www.nibs.org)
