Certification: Disaster Response Inspector

Important Note for All Exam Candidates. As of January 1, 2009, all National Certification examinations that reference the National Electrical Code will be updated to the 2008 edition of the NEC.

  • 50 multiple-choice questions
  • 2-hour limit
  • Open book
Prerequisites: Candidates are required to have at least one of the following certifications:
  • Residential Inspector, Commercial Inspector, or Plans Examiner certification in either building, plumbing, mechanical or electrical;
  • Fire Inspector I, Fire Plans Examiner, OR Certified Building Official.
  • OR be a state-licensed architect or state-licensed engineer.
Content Outline: A detailed outline of the subject matter covered by the exam, including the percentage of questions from each content area and task.
01. ADMINISTRATIVE 30%
  0101. Orientation (2 questions)
 

Report to and attend orientation at local emergency operation center to receive instructions in accordance to NIMS protocol and acquire proper tools, equipment and forms.

  0102. Occupant Contact (3 questions)
  Explain purpose of presence and inspection to the building occupants.
  0103. Notices & Placarding (6 questions)
  Identify proper placards for buildings and post in the proper locations as per the pre-set criteria.
  0104. Estimated percentage of damage (2 questions)
  Determine the estimated percentage of damage of each structure as per referenced guidelines.
  0105. Submit documentation (1 question)
  Submit recommendations for securing the site, additional inspections and documentation to local authority.
  0106. Briefing (1 question)
 

Attend daily briefing and a final debriefing before departure of the scene.

02. INSPECTION 60%
  0201. Site Location (2 questions)
 

Locate and verify specific property for inspection.

  0202. Grounds (3 questions)
  Inspect and evaluate the area for any visible dangers or safety hazards.
  0203. Utilities (1 question)
  Inspect utility services for continuity of connection and report any defects to proper authorities.
  0204. Structure Exterior (5 questions)
  Inspect exterior of the structure using safety assessment form and document any missing or damaged items.
  0205. Structure Stability (6 questions)
  Inspect and document load path continuity of the structure for both gravity and lateral loads.
  0206. Flooding (1 question)
  Identify and document water level/depth.
  0207. Structural Interior (5 questions)
  Inspect interior structural elements for signs of damage, distress, or discontinuity.
  0208. Egress System (3 questions)
  Inspect to ensure the means of egress system is not compromised.
  0209. Non-Structural (1 questions)
  Inspect nonstructural components and document obvious visible damage and note potential falling hazards.
  0210. Building Systems (3 questions)
 

Inspect any visible damage to building systems such as mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire suppression, alarm and people conveying systems.

03. MISCELLANEOUS 10%
  0301. Hazardous Materials (2 questions)
  Document any observed hazardous materials and follow hazardous awareness first responder protocol.
  0302. Field Safety (3 questions)
 

Protect yourself from the hazards associated with the type of incident.
