Certification: Certified Portable Fire Extinguisher Technician

  • 2-hour time limit
  • Open book
Prerequisites:

Work experience of at least 90 days in the field or proof of an equivalent level of training and education, a minimum of 40 hours.

Content Outline: A detailed outline of the subject matter covered by the exam, including the percentage of questions from each content area and task.
01Inspection 4%
  0101. Verify the location, accessibility, and visual condition of the extinguisher.
02Annual Maintenance 20%
  0201. Identify the extinguisher model and the specific manual.  
  0202. Perform external visual examination of the extinguisher to determine manufacture date and date of previous services, physical and mechanical condition to determine if hydrostatic testing, recharging, or internal maintenance is necessary or if it is eligible for continued service.  
  0203. Verify model integrity and proper components of the extinguisher in accordance with the manual.  
  0204. Determine fill and charge of the extinguisher.  
  0205. Repair or replace parts of extinguisher.  
036-year and Internal Maintenance 10%
  0301. Identify the extinguisher model and the specific manual.  
  0302. Determine the specific agent recovery requirements.  
  0303. Implement internal visual examination following the manual.  
04Hydrostatic Testing 10%
  0401. Identify which components are required to have a hydrostatic test and type of test to be performed and necessary equipment.  
  0402. Perform a visual inspection and the required test.  
  0403. Perform post-test procedures on equipment after the test.  
05Recharging 20%
  0501. Identify which components are required to be recharged, with necessary equipment and materials.  
  0502. Recharge according to the manufacturer’s instructions.  
06Selection, Placement, and Installation 20%
  0601. Determine the occupancy and/or hazards requiring protection, special concerns, and environmental conditions.  
  0602. Select the equipment suitable for the application.  
  0603. Determine placement requirements for the equipment selected.  
  0604. Install the equipment in accordance with codes, standards, and manufacturer’s recommendations.  
07Safety 4%
  0701. Follow good safety practices.  
08Recordkeeping and Documentation 12%
  0801. Perform recordkeeping and documentation of actions, including but not exclusively, labels, collars, tags, and papers.
