02. TANK DECOMMISSIONING (Content Area) 12%
  0201. System Draining (Task) 2%
Drain product piping into tank, cap or remove piping, drain tank product and remove sludge. Verify proper placement of vacuum truck and associated equipment.
 
  0202. Tank Purging (Task) 2%
Remove hazardous vapors from tank, venting at appropriate height.
 
  0203. Tank Inerting (Task) 2%
Reduce the level of oxygen concentration in the tank needed to support combustion.
 
  0204. Remove Tank and Tank Fixtures (Task) 2%
Excavate around tank and remove drop tube, fill pipe, gauge pipe, submersible pump and other tank fixtures. Remove tank.

Identify and control concentrations of flammable or combustible vapors before repairing, decommissioning or tank and pipe tightness testing. Use breathing support devices when necessary. Remove sources of ignition.
 
  0402. Excavation Safety (Task) 2%
When working around excavations, verify that excavation walls are sloped properly for soil conditions, that excavations provide adequate space for workers and means of exit and that excavations are properly fenced or barricaded for protection of the public. Confirm that all underground utilities in the vicinity of the UST system have been located and marked.

Observe safety precautions and use personal safety equipment necessary for the work involved in, including the use of protective clothing, safety line and other recommended equipment.

Look for any direct evidence of a release in the tank excavation pit, in the piping trenches, and around the vent and fill areas. Look for indirect evidence of a release such as severe corrosion in removed tanks or indications of previous spills.

Document conditions observed at the location. Photo-document observed conditions such as tank condition upon removal, conditions in the excavation, etc. Determine what cleanup methods are appropriate. Submit initial site characterization report to the proper agency.

Properly assess the site to determine the presence of a release.
 
 

0504. Site Characterization (Task) 8%
Characterize the magnitude and extent of the release.

 
06. SAMPLING AND EVALUATION (Content Area) 22%

Based on site conditions, determine soil or groundwater samples to be collected.
