UST SERVICE TECHNICIAN QUALIFICATIONS (Content Area)

  0101. Scope of Practice of UST Service Technician (Task) 7%
Refer to California UST laws and regulations while working within the scope of a UST Service Technician.
 
 

0102. Training (Task) 5%
Complete and obtain certificate(s) for manufacturer(s) training on specific equipment. Possess and maintain appropriate certifications and state licenses.

 
02. UST SYSTEMS (Content Area) 28%
  0201. UST System Layout and Identification (Task) 7%
Identify the UST system layout and configuration. Identify the types, sizes, materials and contents of tanks and piping.
 
  0202. Vapor Recovery (Task) 7%
Identify Phase I and Phase II vapor recovery components. Safeguard vapor recovery system components to maintain proper operation.
 
  0203. Overfill and Spill Protection (Task) 2%
Determine that overfill protection and spill prevention devices are present.
 
  0204. Corrosion Protection (Task) 5%
Identify components of the cathodic protection system. Safeguard corrosion protection system components to maintain proper operation.
 
 

0205. Inspections (Task) 7%
Inspect sumps and spill containment boxes for accumulation of liquid and debris. Identify defective equipment and components such as nozzles, breakaway couplings, hoses, impact valves and emergency pump shut-off.

 
03. MONITORING EQUIPMENT (Content Area) 32%
  0301. Operation of Monitoring Equipment (Task) 13%
Determine if monitoring equipment is in place and is operational. Determine the alarm mode or status of the UST system. Determine the frequency of monitoring. Program and/or calibrate monitoring equipment.
 
  0302. Monitoring Equipment, Testing & Trouble shooting (Task) 9%
Perform periodic testing and maintenance of monitoring equipment. Identify system deficiencies such as improperly functioning components and inform the UST system owner/operator. Notify local agency as required.
 
  0303. Repair/Replace/Install/Modify Monitoring Equipment (Task) 2%
Repair, replace, install or modify components or re-program or calibrate equipment.
 
  0304. Documentation of Monitoring Equipment (Task) 8%
Complete necessary forms and documentation such as the Monitoring System Certification form. Affix a tag/sticker on monitoring equipment components. Report system failures as required.
 
04. CONTAINMENT TESTING (Content Area) 12%
  0401. Secondary Containment Testing (Task) 8%
Identify secondary containment components. Determine testing requirements and perform secondary containment testing as necessary. Determine the level of the water table where necessary.
 
  0402. Spill Containment Structure Testing (Task) 4%
Perform spill containment structure testing.
 
05. HEALTH AND SAFETY (Content Area) 16%
  0501. Good Housekeeping (Task) 5%
Perform job tasks using procedures to prevent spills and releases. Where necessary, use appropriate emergency response procedures. Follow handling procedures for waste material.
 
  0502. Emergency Equipment (Task) 1%
Identify the location of, fire extinguishers and fire suppression systems and alarm pull boxes.
 
  0503. Vapor and Sources of Ignition (Task) 5%
Identify sources of flammable or combustible vapors and maintain at safe levels. Use procedures to prevent sparks and sources of ignition. Verify grounding of equipment to minimize the possibility of sparks from static electricity or other differences in electrical potential.
 
  0504. Personal Safety and Personal Safety Equipment (Task) 5%
Identify and follow safety precautions for confined spaces. Use personal safety equipment necessary for the work involved such as protective clothing, breathing support devices and other safety equipment. Follow lock-out/tag-out procedures when necessary. Identify and follow site specific safety precautions by utilizing a Site Safety Plan.
