This manual has been provided by Tam Landis, CBO, Secretary,
BOAF, and member of the Disaster Response Committee. The manual
has been in place for many years and was updated just last
year.
The manual provides information, recommendations, and appropriate
actions for the building official to take in preparing and
responding to disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes.
One of the most important features is the "networking
system" which has evolved over the years. It has been
used (too many times, unfortunately) and proven to work quite
well. When the program is followed properly, there is limited
communication redundancy with effective results. A well tuned
"Emergency Contact List" is vital and should include
as many alternate phone and cell numbers as each committee
member is willing to share. The Emergency Contact List is
kept by the Chair and only shared with the other committee
members so as not to publish private numbers to the general
public. Additionally, identification and development of communication
with the "Point of Contact" at ground zero (where
the catastrophe has occurred) immediately after an event is
vital. That particular conduit is necessary to inform volunteering
inspectors of where to go, what kinds of supplies they need
to take, and who to report to when they arrive.
