Errata to the First Printing of Volumes 1 & 2 of the '97 UBC

(July - August 1997)

Table 1-A, page 1-6. In the fourth row, revise the initial value of $391.75 to $391.25.

Section 302.5, page 1-14. In the fourth paragraph, add the references to 305.8 and 308.8 after the reference to Section 303.8.

Section 402.5.1, page 1-41. Revise the reference of Section 1005.2.2 to Section 1004.2.5.

Section 713.3, page 1-73. In the second paragraph, revise the reference of Section 1006.3.2.3 to Section 1005.3.3.5.

Section 713.11, page 1-75. Revise Item 4 as follows: " 4. Penetrations of the ceiling of fire-resistive floor-ceiling or roof-ceiling assemblies. shall be protected in accordance with Section 710.3. "

Section 714, page 1-75. In the fourth paragraph, revise the reference of Section 710.3 to 710.2.3.

Section 906.1, page 1-102. In the first sentence of Item 1, revise the reference of " Groups B, F, M and S Occupancies " to " Groups B, F, M and S Division 1 and 2 Occupancies ."

Section 1003.3.1.10, page 1-108. In the first sentence, add " Group M; " after " Group I, Division 2; "

Section 1004.2.2, page 1-111. In the exception to the third paragraph, revise " width or less " to "width and not less ."

Section 1004.2.3.2, page 1-111. In the first paragraph, delete the term " mezzanines ."

Section 1005.3.3.1, page 1-116. In the third sentence of exception 1, revise " Group B or Group M " to " Groups B, F, M and S." Also, revise the references that follow to "304.6, 306.6, 309.6 and 311.6."

Section 1007.4.2, page 1-121. In the first and second paragraphs, revise the two references of Section 1004.2.6 to Section 1004.2.5.

Section 1008.5.7, page 1-123. After the exception, add a paragraph as follows: " The open vertical space between footboards and seats shall not exceed 9 inches (229 mm) when footboards are more than 30 inches (762 mm) above grade. "

Table 10-A, page 1-125. In footnote 2, revise the references of " Sections 1018, 1019 and 1020" to" Sections 1007.4, 1007.5 and 1007.7."

Table 31-B, page 1-293. In footnote 1, revise the reference of " Table 9-A" to " Table 8-B."

Section 1112.2.2, page 1-326. In the last sentence, revise the reference of "Section 1103.1.9.3" to " Section 1103.1.9.2."

 

ERRATA TO THE FIRST PRINTING OF VOLUME 2 OF THE UBC

Section 1630.1.1, page 2-13. In the eighth paragraph, revise the term " noncurrently " to " nonconcurrently. "

Section 1633.2.9, page 2-21. In Item 6, revise to read as follows: " 6. Connections of diaphragms to the vertical elements in structures in Seismic Zones 3 and 4, having a plan irregularity of Type 1, 2, 3 or 4 in Table 16-M, shall be designed without considering either the one-third increase usually permitted or the duration of load increase considered in allowable stresses for elements resisting earthquake forces. "

Section 1634.4, page 2-21. In the first sentence, revise the reference of Section 1632 to Section 1634.

Section 1634.5, page 2-22. In Item 1, revise the reference of Section 1645.2 to Section 1630.2.

Figure 16-2, page 2-37. Revise the Hawaiian seismic map as shown:

Section 1921.3.2.1, page 2-158. In the first sentence, revise the reference of Formula (20-3) to Formula (10-3).

Section 1921.6.6.5, page 2-162. In the third paragraph of Item 2, revise the reference of Section 1921.6.5.6 to Section 1921.6.6.6.

Sections 2108.1.4.2.1 and 2108.1.4.2.2, page 2-219. Revise the titles as follows: " Walls with unfactored axial ..."

Section 2228.5.2, page 2-271. In the second paragraph, revise the term of "concurrently" to " nonconcurrently."

Section 2315.1, page 2-279. Revise the eighth paragraph as follows: " Diaphragm sheathing nails or other approved sheathing connectors shall be driven so that their head or crown is flush but shall not fracture with the surface of the sheathing."

Table 23-II-G, page 2-286. Revise the footnotes as follows:
1 In Seismic Zones 0, 1, and 2, and 3, the maximum ratio may be 2:1.
2 In Seismic Zones 0, 1, and 2, and 3, the maximum ratio may be 3 1/2:1.
3In Seismic Zone 4, the maximum ratio may be 31/2:1 for walls not exceeding 10 feet (3048 mm) in height on one side of the door to a one-story Group U Occupancy.
4 Not permitted.

Also, add a footnote 3 designation to the third material row under "Vertical Diaphragms" and replace the footnote 3 designation in the fourth row under the same column with a footnote 4 designation.

Tables 23-II-I-1 and 23-II-I-2, page 2-288. In both tables, replace footnote 3 with the following:
"3 In Seismic Zones 3 and 4, wWhere allowable shear values exceed 350 pounds per foot (5.11 N/mm), foundation sill plates and all framing members receiving edge nailing from abutting panels shall not be less than a single 3-inch (76 mm) nominal member and foundation sill plates shall not be less than a single 3-inch (76 mm) nominal member. In shear walls where total wall design shear does not exceed 600 pounds per foot (8.76 N/mm), a single 2-inch (51mm) nominal sill plate may be used, provided anchor bolts are designed for a load capacity of 50 percent or less of the allowable capacity and bolts have a minimum of 2-inch-by-2-inch-by-3/16-inch (51 mm by 51 mm by 5 mm) thick plate washers. Plywood joint and sill plate nNailing shall be staggered in all cases. "

Section 2316.2, page 2-293. After Item 26, add the following Item:

Section 2318.3.1, page 2-293. Add the following paragraph:
" In Seismic Zones 3 and 4, toenails shall not be used to transfer lateral forces in excess of 150 pounds per foot (2188 N/m) from diaphragms to shear walls, drag struts (collectors) or other elements, or from shear walls to other elements.
EXCEPTION: Structures built in accordance with Section 2320.

Section 2320.4.4, page 2-299. Replace with the following:
" 2320.4.4 Lateral force-resisting system. Buildings in Seismic Zone 3 which are not provided with braced wall lines in accordance with Section 2320.4 or which are of unusual shape as described in Section 2320.5.4 shall have a lateral force-resisting system designed to resist the forces specified in Chapter 16."

Section 2320.5.4, page 2-299. Revise as follows:
" 2320.5.4 Unusually shaped buildings. When of unusual shape, buildings of light-frame construction shall have a lateral force-resisting system designed to resist the forces specified in Chapter 16. One or more of the following shall be considered to constitute an unusual shape Buildings shall be considered to be of unusual shape when the building official determines that the structure has framing irregularities, offsets, split levels or any configuration which creates discontinuities in the seismic load path and may include one or more of the following:"

Section 2320.5.4.7, page 2-300. Delete.
