ICC/NSSA Consensus Committee on Storm Shelters (IS-STM)
New standard will save lives when tornados strike
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Board of Standards Review has approved a standard for storm shelters proposed by the International Code Council and the National Storm Shelter Association.
Jurisdictions can adopt and administer the new standard once it is published. The standard is expected to be available in September at the Code Council’s Annual Conference in Minneapolis. During the final action hearings, a code change recommendation will be made to include the new standard in the 2009 International Building and Residential Codes.
ICC 500-2008 "ICC/NSSA Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters" will provide design, construction and performance of design regulations for community shelters and residential safe rooms. The level of wind resistance required for the shelters and safe rooms will be very high, based on rare storms. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is involved in the effort and supports it with funding.
