The 2005 ICC Chapter of the Year Award was presented to the
Building Officials Association of Texas (BOAT) during
the Annual Conference in Detroit. BOAT officers were on hand
to accept the award that was given during the conference's
Opening Session on Sept. 26.
BOAT, founded in 1962, is an affiliate of the Texas Municipal
League and was originally organized to unite with other Texas
municipalities to provide city workers with a better understanding
of local government. Today, BOAT covers a 268,000 square mile
service area and has more than 300 members from 231 municipalities
and more than 40 building industry members.
BOAT participates with the North Texas Chapter of ICC and
the North Central Texas Council of Governments code review
and development process. The organizations, along with industry
professionals and in cooperation with a regional council of
governments, established four code review committees to perform
in-depth reviews of the current editions of the I-Codes and
make recommendations for regional amendments. Some of those
amendments are also submitted to the ICC code development
process. BOAT also pays for registration, travel and lodging
expenses each year for one member to attend the hearings and
speak on code issues important to the chapter.
