Henry Green appears before House Science
Committee
On October 26, ICC President Henry Green appeared before the
House Committee on Science to discuss ICCs response to
the National Institute of Standards and Technologys report
and recommendations from the investigation into the World Trade
Center collapse. In his testimony, President Green discussed
ICCs support for NISTs work, ICCs code development
process and how building codes and the ICC protect lives and
property. President Green then answered specific questions from
the committee on the steps ICC is taking to incorporate the
NIST recommendations into the I-Codes.
The hearing included a lengthy dialogue between the committee
and panelists on the results of the NIST investigation, the
specificity of its recommendations and how NIST plans to work
with the ICC and standards developers to get those recommendations
implemented in a timely manner. In the end, NIST committed,
at the behest of Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (NY-24),
to continue working with ICC to turn recommendations into
code language by the March deadline for the 2007 supplement.
Other organizations that testified that day included: the
National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National
Fire Protection Association, the American Society of Civil
Engineers, the Skyscraper Safety Campaign and a member of
NISTs National Construction Safety Team Advisory Board.
Prior to the hearing, President Green met with Chairman Boehlert,
Rep. Joe Schwarz (MI-07), Rep. Vernon Ehlers (MI-03) and Rep.
Al Green (TX-09), and the staff for several additional members
of the committee. President Green was personally introduced
and welcomed at the hearing by the Chairman and the two Michigan
congressmen.
