Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

Welcome to the ICC Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

The Code Council has revisited how best to provide an online, professional Discussion Forum and area within the website that has a sense of community – where Members and nonmembers can provide input and exchange ideas with their peers in the industry. The new Codes & Standards Discussion Forum does just that, as it allows Registered Website Users and ICC Members to discuss the I-Codes in an online community.

Per section 502.4.6 Exception 4. It''s only the area of the room the door opens into not the entire building. So in your case I would say "Not required" if the space is only 2245 sq. ft.

I would only use the square footage of the space the door opens into

One must look at the intent of the vestibule. IF the space that the door opens into is less than 3000 SF ----I would count air space. Reasoning - such things as case openings, sliding windows( uless spring tensioned to remain closed), etc. do not count as they do not limit or prohibit the movement of air thus allowing other areas to lose heated or cooled air.

Rjc114: agree with both above. Remember that the reason for the vestibule is to create a break from the elements. You might want to express to the tenant to consider it. It gets cold in Pittsburgh and if they have ladies in the office they will save on heat in the long run. Other then that they are under the magic #.
