Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

Welcome to the ICC Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

The Code Council has revisited how best to provide an online, professional Discussion Forum and area within the website that has a sense of community – where Members and nonmembers can provide input and exchange ideas with their peers in the industry. The new Codes & Standards Discussion Forum does just that, as it allows Registered Website Users and ICC Members to discuss the I-Codes in an online community.

Exception 1 to Article 1007. 1 IBC 2009/2012 [Accessible means of egress...] reads “Accessible means of egress are not required in alterations to existing buidlings.”

Does this exception apply if the only alteration to the existing building is to provide an accessible elevatior to a basement assembly space that requires two means of egress [neither existing means is accessible]. Even if the new elevator was compliant for accessible egress, still only one means of egress would be provided, compared to two that woul be required for new construction.
