Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

Welcome to the ICC Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

The Code Council has revisited how best to provide an online, professional Discussion Forum and area within the website that has a sense of community – where Members and nonmembers can provide input and exchange ideas with their peers in the industry. The new Codes & Standards Discussion Forum does just that, as it allows Registered Website Users and ICC Members to discuss the I-Codes in an online community.

Hey

For grade slabs and footings the IRC does not require reinforcement ... except for footings in SDC - "D" which must be 3" clear to earth per IRC R403.1.3

For reinforced foundation walls the required clearance for prescriptive reinforcement to earth is actually greater than 3" per the IRC R404.1 table footnotes.

If additional design steel is shown on the drawings, the clearances may also be shown ... subject to the 3" minimum earth clearance provision of ACI-318 as a reference standard per IRC Chapter 43

Might be good to add a general table on reinforcement clearances to the IRC for clarity ... ;-)

IRC R403.1.3 requires bottom reinforcement in concrete footings located in Seismic Design Categories D1 and D2 to be located a minimum of 3 inches clear from the bottom of the footing.

I guess it doesn''t say anything about other footings, because it doesn''t require them to be reinforced.

That''s it Eagle, ACI318. Thanks as that governs all placement of rebar a minimum 3 inch clearance from any soil no matter seismic zone.
