Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

Welcome to the ICC Codes & Standards Discussion Forum

The Code Council has revisited how best to provide an online, professional Discussion Forum and area within the website that has a sense of community – where Members and nonmembers can provide input and exchange ideas with their peers in the industry. The new Codes & Standards Discussion Forum does just that, as it allows Registered Website Users and ICC Members to discuss the I-Codes in an online community.

I recently was told that they are not recommending encasing Romex wiring in closed cell spray foam insulation.  Can anyone expand on this issue? No pun intended.

Who is "they" & do "they" give any reasons? I ask because the code requires derating with 2 or more cables containing 2 or more current carrying conductors. See section 334.80 in the 2011 NEC.

Hope that helps a little.

Ron

I have also heard of it, and have seen a picture of a branch circuit wiring that had a continuous load and was heated to actually char the insulation surrounding the nm sheathed cable. I agree on the derating of these conductors. I didn't do the inspection myself, so I can not verify if the correct wiring size and ocpd size were correct in the pics that I saw.

If you say you believe like you should, why do you behave like you shouldn't?

I would say to give the manufacturer and product before making a general statement like this.  It may all depend upon the product...

Then we can take it from there.

If spray foam is applied incorrectly (too thick it heats up) and not in layers it can damage the insulation. But the damage probably come from overload of a circuit IMO

Don't make generalizations.  There are too many types of "spray foam."
