The International Code Council unveiled SMARTcodes™, a cutting
edge system to automate code compliance checking, on Wed.,
Nov. 1, in Washington, D.C.
Presenters demonstrated how a computer can check a real building plan for
code compliance to the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code. The demonstration
included a manual code search and an automated code compliance check.
The manual code search allows the user to ask specific questions about the International Energy Conservation Code and drill down to the code, reference standards, code commentary, and code interpretations by code section, as well as product listing directories that go directly to manufacturer’s product information.
The automated code compliance check will take the electronic building plan and automatically check for code compliance. The user can choose several options to output the results, printing out the sections of the code that apply, an inspection checklist of things to look for, or viewing the building in 3D as a virtual walkthrough that shows the building components that don’t comply with code.
SMARTcodes™ work on the concept that is known as “interoperability.” To be interoperable means to share and use information across various interests and disciplines. In this case, the use of information technology will help building departments deliver more efficient and effective public services and enhance public safety. The benefits are enormous.
Currently, many building departments do plan reviews by hand
so building data isn’t easily transferable or accessed. By
automating and sharing data, building departments can reduce
the time it takes to review plans and increase code compliance,
allowing staff resources to be shifted to the field to perform
enhanced building inspections.
ICC is developing SMARTcodes™ in coordination with the buildingSMART
initiative led by the International Alliance for Interoperability
North America (IAI-NA), a Council of the National Institute
of Building Sciences.
ICC will present SMARTcodes™ during buildingSMART week, hosted by IAI-NA. To register, or learn more about interoperability, visit www.iai-na.org.
