You could win $2,500
All you have to do is submit a paper for the World Standards
Day Paper Competition by August 31 and you could win up to $2,500.
This year's theme is Standards and the Global Village. It
takes a global village to raise awareness of the importance
of standards to the global economy and create strong standards.
Each year, standards developers around the world celebrate
World Standards Day. The U.S. celebration of World Standards
Day 2007 is October 18. It kicks off with a reception and
exhibits, followed by a dinner, where winners of the 2007
World Standards Day Paper Contest will receive their awards.
At the dinner, the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award
recipient also is recognized. Named after the late U.S. Secretary
of Commerce, the award honors an individual who has dedicated
him or herself to the promotion of standardization as a key
tool in the elimination of global trade barriers.
This year, the award goes to National Institute of Standards
and Technology Acting Deputy Director Dr. James Hill, a former
president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating
and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). In a previous post
as director of the NIST Building and Fire Research Laboratory,
Dr. Hill led the investigation of World Trade Center building
failures and the performance evaluation of structures in the
wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Celebrated annually each October, World Standard Day pays
tribute to the thousands of volunteers around the world who
participate in standardization activities and helps to raise
awareness of the role that standards play in addressing national
and global priorities. The International Code Council is a
member of the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning
Committee.
