2004 Codes Forum
James Lee Witt speaks at Conference Luncheon
Speaking
during the conference luncheon, Chief Executive Officer James
Lee Witt opened by asking members to remember their fellow
code officials in Florida who have been working tirelessly
to help the state recover from four major hurricanes.
Recalling his eight years as Director of FEMA, Witt explained
that he saw community after community destroyed by acts of
nature, but that he also saw homes survive because they were
built right.
Emphasizing the importance of building codes to the public,
Witt encouraged government representatives to get the most
from their Mayors, Commissioners and other elected leaders.
"When you walk into the Mayor's Office they know who
you are and what you do," Witt said. "Use that to
your advantage to get the resources you need to protect your
community."
Witt also encouraged members to turn to ICC's Board of Directors
and staff for any and all resources to help them accomplish
their goals to make their communities safer. "If we don't
work together as a team then everything we believe in in building
better and safer will never be accomplished," Witt explained.
He also spoke of what he expects to be an exciting new year
for ICC. "We have the opportunity to plant the trees
of the future and we dare not miss these opportunities,"
said Witt.
