FDNY to Update Fire Safety Standards Proposed NYC Fire Code Based on IFC
The New York City Fire Department has completed a final draft of a new Fire Code‚ the first comprehensive revision of the City’s Fire Code in almost a century. The proposed new code is based on the International Fire Code (IFC). The changes come after an extensive three-year Fire Code revision project to review and update fire safety standards throughout the City. Read the new code proposal.
Lightweight Materials Pilot Launch
NYC Buildings Commissioner Patricia Lancaster and Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta launched the Lightweight Materials Pilot Program in Staten Island. The new program partners building inspectors and engineers with fire department firefighters to conduct joint inspections of construction sites. Superintendent Requirement Begins
All permit applications for new building and demolitions for buildings up to and including 14 stories require a registered construction superintendent to be listed on the new PW-2 form. View the new requirement.

Safety Standards for Microturbines
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced new regulations for the installation of microturbine systems in residential and commercial buildings‚ making New York City the first U.S. city to establish safety standards for the use of microturbines in these building types. The new standards enable building owners to take advantage of microturbine technology and will help the city achieve its energy efficiency goals. Read the press release.

Since joining the International Code Council‚ the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) has become an active participant in the Code Council process. This year‚ three DOB staff members were appointed to Council standing committees and succeeded in getting their first code change passed in Rochester‚ New York‚ in May. In recognition of these achievements‚ the Code Council presented DOB Commissioner Patricia Lancaster and Assistant Commissioner Benjamin Jones with a Code Council Jurisdictional Membership Certificate.
NYSSPE/BOMA Covers Energy Codes
Department of Buildings Chief Sustainability Officer Deborah Taylor‚ a recent appointee to the Code Council’s IECC Committee‚ attended the NYS Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE) and Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of New York meeting to discuss the NYC Energy Codes. At the meeting‚ Taylor delivered a presentation on the new Buildings Department procedures required to demonstrate compliance with New York State’s Energy Conservation Construction Code.

Code Council staff met with U.S. Congressman Peter King and fire service representatives to discuss plans for the Congressional Fire Services Institute’s December 8 Forum‚ promotion of the Fire Sprinkler Incentive Act‚ and the Community Building Code Administration Grant Program.
