Paying Tribute to Code Officials
Code Council Board President pays tribute to code enforcement officials at the 2008 Codes Forum.
At the onset of the Code Development Hearings in Palm Springs, Council Board President Steve Shapiro paid special tribute to code enforcement officials who have contributed to the success of the ICC code development process. “I now request that all attendees present please stand and observe a moment of respectful silence in memory of Kenneth Yost and to honor the work over many years of the code officials across the United States who have passed on‚ men and women, whose work protecting the public put them in harm’s way while in the line of duty‚ exposing them to dangers that threatened their health, their safety or even cost them their lives‚” Shapiro said.
A Smooth Transition to a Safer California Council Appoints California

In an effort to assist state agencies‚ industry stakeholders and code enforcement in transitioning from the 2001 California Mechanical Code and Plumbing Code to the current 2007 editions‚ which took effect January 1‚ the Code Council appointed a team of California experts to lead a support project that consists of specific documents and education programs focused on California. ICC Evaluation Service‚ Inc. (ICC-ES) is expanding into plumbing, mechanical and gas product listings. ICC-ES will develop‚ implement and maintain accredited listing programs under the International Codes and other appropriate codes and standards to meet the needs of those who enforce building safety codes. Living and Building in the WUI New Standards Go into Effect
The new building standards for the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) in State Responsibility Areas went into effect on January 1. Recently adopted building codes and standards reduce the risk of burning embers igniting buildings. Codes already in effect place standards on roofing construction and attic venting. The new building codes require siding‚ exterior doors‚ decking‚ windows‚ eaves wall vents and enclosed overhanging decks to meet new test standards. Get details on the regulations.

Assistant State Fire Marshal
Tonya Hoover has been appointed Assistant State Fire Marshal. Chief Hoover has been actively involved in fire prevention and public education and risk mitigation for 20 years‚ and most recently served as the Fire Marshal for the Moraga-Orinda Fire District located east of Oakland/Berkeley hills. Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps Available
Draft maps for Fire Hazard Severity Zones in Local Responsibility Areas are now available online. The draft maps are intended for local agencies and others to review areas of Very High Fire Hazard Severity and provide input to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Final recommendations for Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones will be developed and transmitted to local agencies. Download draft maps here.
