The City of San Diego and the San Diego Area Chapter have
teamed up with ICC to offer a first of its kind, comprehensive,
11-month I-Code
Academy designed to provide in-depth training on the 2006
IBC and IFC in preparation for the upcoming California code
adoptions. Running through June 2007, the program has seen
unexpectedly high participation, with average attendance at
each seminar of 80-100 attendees.
It is the goal of the City of San Diego's Building Official,
Isam Hassenin, to ensure that the City is prepared to enforce
the code immediately upon adoption. Hassenin is providing
a training program for all City staff, as well as code and
design professionals, that would allow everyone to learn the
same concepts and regulations at the same time. To help San
Diego achieve this goal, ICC has worked closely with City
staff as well as representatives of the San Diego Chapter
ensure that the entire Academy, as well as each individual
seminar, (closely) meets the needs of the attendees. From
selection of the instructors through adjusting the topics
covered in each seminar, the goal is to deliver the highest
quality training experience that reflects the local need.
To allow for the greatest flexibility, each month a new I-Code
topic is presented, and each seminar is presented three times.
This schedule allows San Diego, as well as other jurisdictions,
to provide training to its entire staff on a staggered basis,
so that all staff are not away from the office at one time,
and they have the flexibility to select the date that best
works for them.
