Information on the new Chapter Advocacy Program will soon be on its way to chapters. The new program is designed to assist chapters in advocating for the International Code Council and its legislative initiatives. The 2008 initiative is to promote and support the enactment of the Community Building Code Administrative Grant Act (CBCAG) introduced in Congress by Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Representative Dennis Moore of Kansas. If enacted and funded, the CBCAG Act will provide competitively evaluated federal grants, locally matched, to local governments who seek to build up or improve their local code administration and enforcement capabilities.
"Individually and collectively, our chapters have the power to significantly impact our legislative initiatives," said Government Relations Senior Vice President Sara Yerkes.
Working together with their Government Relations state and local representatives, each chapter will be encouraged to adopt a model resolution. These resolutions will be given to each member of Congress whose state and/or district includes members from that chapter. A national web-available map of these adoptions will be maintained.
"The Government Relations Department is very energized and eager to work with the chapters," Yerkes said. "The CBCAG Act is designed to support public safety at the grassroots level of building and fire codes administration. Delivering your local and regional view to Congress will be essential to our success."
The program is voluntary and intended to be on-going. Chapters, members and Code Council coalition partners are being asked to unite in this cause so that we may have a stronger voice. Chapters who participate in the program can earn points in the Chapter Rewards Program.
