The Code Council's Ad Hoc Permit Tech Committee (PTC) held its first meeting on November 8-9 at the Renaissance St. Louis Hotel, in St. Louis, Missouri. The committee is made up of 15 members, each from a different region of the United States, with one member from Canada. Eleven of these members serve in some capacity on a Code Council Chapter board. Code Council Board member John Darnall chairs the committee and Chapter Relations Vice President Laura Scott serves as the staff liaison. The meeting started with introductions and a quick overview of each person's job or hometown. After discussing the scope of the committee, the group was divided into three workgroups: certification, needs of the permit technician and training. Each group met individually to discuss ways that the Code Council can assist permit technicians in their assigned areas. The committee then reconvened to discuss each group's ideas. The committee will meet again on February 19-20 during the Code Council's Codes Forum in Palm Springs, California, and plans on submitting a final report to the Council's Board of Directors in May.

Testimonials Help Raise Awareness
A testimonial is defined as a written or spoken statement from a public figure or private citizen extolling the virtue of a product, person or group. Sometimes the best way to learn the value of something or someone is to hear it first-hand. Permit technicians play a valuable role in their jurisdictions not only for the public they meet each day, but for the building officials and inspectors who have come to rely on them. This article, written by Tracy Halladay, Building Official for the City of Roy, Utah, and First Vice President for the Utah Chapter, was originally featured in the September 2007 edition of the Utah Chapter Newsletter.
