Chapter members receive assistance on performing residential inspections from Code Council Instructor Tim Burgett during MACA's 2007 Chapter Education Benefit day. |
On May 4, an EF-5 tornado nearly two miles wide tore through Greensburg, Kansas, claiming 10 lives and effectively leveling the city. The next day, a large contingent of Code Council Heart of America Chapter (HOA) members arrived on site as representatives of HOA and the Kansas Disaster Assessment Team.
It became clear to the group that the first post-assessment task would be identifying what the city of about 2,000 residents would need to begin reconstruction, and they quickly found out that they would be starting from square one. Although the International Building Code, International Residential Code and International Plumbing Code had been adopted, a building inspection program had yet to be established and staffed. Members of the response team soon met with Greensburg City Manager Steve Hewitt to discuss how they could help get the ball rolling. The experience proved to be a learning opportunity for the HOA members as well as the residents.
