International Code Council CEO Rick Weiland, President Wally
Bailey, Board member Bill Dupler, Government Relations Regional
Manager John Payne, Vice President of Chapter Relations Laura
Scott and more than 500 Ohio code officials braved frigid
temperatures to attend the Ohio Building Officials Association
(OBOA) 17th Annual Joint Conference. Besides a record-breaking
attendance, the conference featured more than 130 hours of
continuing education. Held at the Saw Mill Creek Resort in
Huron, Ohio, February 4-6, the conference is attended each
year by all the local Code Council Ohio chapters.
Hosted on a rotating basis by one local chapter, the host
chapter this year was the North Central Ohio Building Officials
Association (NCOBOA). While there, President Bailey addressed
the assembly and participated in its National News Conference.
Dupler installed the new OBOA Board of Directors at the Monday
evening banquet, which included President Bill McErlane, Vice
President Bruce Wholf, Secretary Philip Seyboldt, Treasurer
Michael Rudey and Past President Rick Helsinger. Weiland presented
the first printing of the new 2007 Ohio Building Code, Ohio
Plumbing Code and Ohio Mechanical Code to Gerald O. Holland,
Chairman for the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards.
In addition, Diana Westfall, Secretary in the Council's Ohio
Field Office, staffed a booth during the conference.

Ohio Permit Technicians Seek ICC Chapter Status

Permit technicians in central Ohio have a new goal-to eventually
form their own organization and apply for ICC chapter status!
A group of ambitious technicians from around the area have
made great strides in beginning to form the Central Ohio Permit
Technicians, who are now working as a committee under the
Central Ohio Code Officials Association (COCOA). The
group had its first meeting in the Code Council's Ohio Field
Office on January 18. They discussed what they would like
to accomplish, various networking opportunities, how to obtain
ICC Permit Technician certification, challenges they face
in their jobs and reviewed results of a recent e-mail survey.
Vice President of Chapter Relations Laura Scott gave a short
presentation on how to deal with difficult people. Three subcommittees
have been formed, which include Education, Membership and
Code Consistency. While the group looks forward to one day
operating on its own, they are enjoying the mentoring that
COCOA, a long-standing and successful ICC chapter, are able
to provide them.
