Over the years, a handful of chapters have expressed a desire to have the Code Council assist them with the development and maintenance of their websites. We investigated the possibility and found there are literally thousands of companies who offer web services at a very reasonable cost. Yes, it seems the self-employed “web vendor” is as about as popular a profession as attorneys are these days. These vendors offer every service imaginable, including web design, hosting and maintenance. Since this is not the Council’s core competency, we believe companies like this can provide these services much more efficiently and economically than ICC.
As a follow-up to this investigation, Chapter staff collected information from various web vendors, analyzed chapter websites and prepared a presentation entitled, “How to Build a Website” that was delivered at the September 2006 Chapter Leadership Program in Orlando, Florida.
“We did the leg work for chapters so they wouldn’t have to,” said Laura Scott, Vice President of Chapter Relations. “The presentation details what chapters will need to consider when developing a website. We wanted to de-mystify the process as much as possible so chapters would be encouraged to begin the process.”
Delivered by Barb Cary, the Council’s Internet Content Coordinator, the program featured existing ICC chapter websites—from the sophisticated to the simplistic—and made comparisons on content, style, format, features, maintenance and cost. Several vendors were contrasted for services and cost.
