Four Chapter Merit Awards were presented during this year's
Annual Conference in Orlando. Merit Awards are given annually
to chapters that distinguish themselves through activities
that demonstrate the goals and objectives of ICC. Chapters
receiving 2006 Merit Awards include the Association of
Minnesota Building Officials, Heart of America Chapter, Idaho
Association of Building Officials and North Texas Chapter.
AMBO President Craig Hoium accepts a
Merit Award from Awards Committee Chairman Ed Berkel.
The Association
of Minnesota Building Officials (AMBO) is a statewide
chapter with nearly 200 members. The chapter has been very
active in the past year, investing $40,000 in their annual
education institute that attracted more than 400 attendees
over five days. AMBO also initiated the development of residential
and commercial plumbing inspector certifications, introduced
legislation requiring certification of inspectors, aided in
statewide residential contractor training, and is currently
working with the state to streamline the code adoption process.
AMBO initiated a combined effort of all the Minnesota chapters,
which lead to a $17,000 donation to the ICC Foundation's Hurricane
Relief Fund. In addition, they spent nearly $10,000 to sponsor
attendance of code officials at the ICC Code Hearings and
participated in the development of the ICC Upper Great
Plains Region III Chapter.
Awards Committee Chairman Ed Berkel
presents a Merit Award to Tina Rakes and the Heart of
America Chapter.
Heart
of America, a statewide chapter in Kansas, is celebrating
its 40th anniversary this year. They have developed partnerships
with Johnson County, the Kansas Licensing Program, the AIA
Kansas Chapter and the state of Kansas Disaster Assessment
Team to promote the use of I-Codes and continuing code education.
Heart of America held several continuing education seminars,
which provided nearly 130 classes to over 8,000 attendees
and placed over 3,000 ICC code books in the hands of those
students. In addition, the chapter serves ICC at the national
level via the Board of Directors and ICC Committees. All of
this activity was certainly beneficial; the chapter's membership
grew 50 percent!

a Merit Award from Awards Committee Chairman Ed Berkel.
Idaho Association
of Building Officials (IDABO) recently finalized a
transition to one state chapter with five regions of the state
forming as chapters under IDABO. This new structure allows
the chapter to have statewide coordination of training, government
relations, communications and membership recruitment. Other
accomplishments include development of an education committee
to allow for better statewide training, implementation of
a statewide contractor licensing system and creation of a
special inspection registration system. A website committee
was also formed to allow for better communication among members
across the state.
Awards Committee Chairman Ed Berkel

Texas Chapter.
North
Texas Chapter is a local organization of 500 members-up
more than 300 from a year ago. The chapter's members serve
on 13 different ICC Boards and Committees, are actively involved
in code review and development, and attend ICC Code Hearings
each year. The North Texas Chapter works closely with the
North Texas Council of Governments to perform in-depth studies
of the I-Codes to aid in uniform code adoption. The chapter
monitored over 4,500 bills relating to building and construction
that were introduced to its state legislature. The chapter
also hosted the 13th Annual Building Professionals Institute,
launched an Employee of the Month Award and actively participates
in the ICC Region X Coalition.
