Sylvana Ricciarini (left) and Mark Johnson,
Senior Vice President of Business and Product Development
(middle) visit with Mike Otechi at the ICC Expo.
Michael Otechi Nyangweso, Director of Contract Services Associates
in Nairobi and Secretary of the ICC Kenya Chapter,
attended his first ICC Annual Conference in Orlando last month.
A guest of ICC's International Government Relations Department,
Otechi presented "The Non-Enforcement of Out-Dated Building
Codes: A Call for Global Professional Interventions-The Kenyan
Experience." In his presentation, Otechi revealed the
plight of the country's economy, infrastructure and the lack
of minimum standards to resolve the health and environmental
problems currently experienced. Otechi had an opportunity
to meet with several chapter leaders at lunch the next day
and learn about code administration in the United States.
Rick Okawa, ICC's Vice President of International Services,
said of Otechi's visit, "Mike was totally amazed by our
Annual Conference program, member participation and our efforts
to continually improve our building regulatory system. He
wants Kenya to have such a system to improve the public's
health and safety, and is requesting ICC's support and assistance
towards this worthy objective."
Otechi will meet with Sylvana Ricciarini, ICC's Director
of International Operations, and World Bank officials before
returning to Kenya in mid-November. Ricciarini has been providing
assistance in establishing a building safety program in Kenya
with the collaboration of the International development community.
