Readying
for the Silent Auction
Preparations are underway for ICC's Silent Auction at the 2006 Annual
Conference and Codes Forum in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The money raised
from this event will be donated to a local charitable organization in
Orlando. The auction's success depends on you. This year, ICCF is asking
every ICC chapter to donate something that is unique to, or portrays the
spirit of, their chapter.
Last
year's Silent Auction raised $3,700 for YouthBuild Detroit, a non-profit
organization that teaches young people trade skills while they rebuild
communities. Stay tuned for more information on the 2006 Silent Auction.
Transition
to the 2006
I-Codes Now!
ICC
has seminars that will help chapter members make the transition from the
2003 I-Codes to the 2006 I-Codes. The seminars focus on major changes
between the codes and are appropriate for design, construction, fire,
inspection and other professionals. Seminars are taught by instructors
well-versed in a specific code's changes.
For
a complete list of seminars available to help you with the transition,
click
here or contact ICC at 1-888-ICC-SAFE (422-7233) ext. 33819.
Why
Seek IAS Accreditation?
"Accreditation through IAS ensures that the department not only meets
the national standard of excellence, but also the local community's needs
and expectations." —Chuck Ramani, President, International Accreditation
Service (IAS).

ICC
Rewards Active Chapters
Think you deserve something extra for actively participating in ICC? Want
to be rewarded for all your hard work as a chapter? We agree! That's why
ICC created the new Chapter Rewards Program, now available to all active
chapters.
Here's
how the program works: Each time your chapter completes a qualified task
from the task list such as participating in Building Safety Week, donating
to an ICC Foundation (ICCF) fund, maintaining a chapter Web site or contracting
a day of training from ICC, your chapter generates points. Those points
can later be redeemed for neat stuff like huge discounts on more training
and/or ICC products like the IRC Video Series, e-Codes, magazine subscriptions
or free registration to the ICC Annual Conference. You decide!

ICCF
Offers Scholarships for Children
|
In
order to continue providing scholarships, ICCF needs contributions.
If your chapter is interested in making a contribution, or would
like to establish its own scholarship fund through ICCF, please
contact ICC Deputy Chief Operating Officer Dominic Sims
at 1-888-ICC-SAFE (422-7233) ext. 5267, or via
e-mail. ICC thanks the Colorado Chapter for its generous
donation to the Children of Employees Scholarship Fund. The
Children of Employees Scholarship Fund was created in honor
of Brian Yerkes and Geoffrey Hall, children of ICC employees
who tragically lost their lives in 2005. Each year, ICC will
award two scholarships of $5,000 to children of ICC employees
in pursuit of higher education. |
|
|
Help get the word out
to your chapter members about the ICCF Scholarship Program. To support building
and fire safety, raise public
awareness, and honor those essential to the formation of the ICC, its legacy
organizations or chapters, the ICCF Scholarship Program offers both sponsored
and managed scholarships.
Sponsored
scholarships for the children of employees of ICC Governmental Members include
the ICCF General Scholarship Fund, as well as the William J. Tangye, J.W.
"Bill" Neese, C.D. Howard and Charlie O'Meilia Scholarships. The deadline
for applying for the sponsored scholarships is June 30, 2006. Managed scholarships
include the Building Officials Association of South Carolina Scholarship
and the Richard "Dick" Gecoma Scholarship.
Application
forms are available online. For details, click

Governance
Review Committee Update
The ICC Governance Review Ad Hoc Committee met in San Antonio, Texas,
in February. At the meeting, an ICC Governance Committee was selected
that will continue to solicit membership input through the Web site, e-mails
and letters as well as at meetings, including the Annual Conference in
Orlando, Florida, in September.
This
broad-based committee, charged with reviewing ICC's form of governance,
will submit a final report to the Board of Directors and membership and
may include recommendations for amendment or retention of the current
governance structure.
A
teleconference with chapter leadership is being planned and the committee
looks forward to your participation. We are committed to helping ICC grow
into an organization that serves the entire membership and the code enforcement
community.

ICC
Begins Search for CEO
ICC plans to hire a new Chief Executive Officer before the association's
Annual Conference in September.
"James
Lee Witt's stature and worldwide recognition helped to develop ICC's credibility
as a leader in public safety, especially in the area of building safety
and fire prevention," said ICC Board President Henry Green. "His business
and leadership skills, along with unparalleled experience in disaster
management, have been a great asset to the association, its members and
staff. We thank him for positioning ICC on the path to success."
Witt's
tenure as CEO will end on Aug. 1. An international search firm has been
retained to work with the Board of Directors to identify the most qualified
successor from a pool of internal and external candidates. Click
here for more information.

Assisting Officials Impacted by Hurricanes

After
Hurricane Katrina, demolition is the only choice for many buildings
such as this one along Highway 90 in Biloxi, Mississippi. (George
Armstrong/FEMA)
|
|
To date, ICC Chapters
have collected over $40,000 to help fellow members who work for building
and fire departments impacted by recent hurricanes in the Gulf Coast. These
funds, donated to ICCF's Members Helping Members relief effort, will be
used to help ICC members and their families. ICC thanks the Virginia
Plumbing & Mechanical Inspectors Association and the North Florida
Chapter for their recent donations.
For
those that have not donated and would still like to contribute to this worthy
cause, the Members Helping Members fund is still open. Click
here for more information.
Grants
Available to Hurricane Victims
If you are employed on a full-time basis by a building or fire department;
are a resident of Louisiana, Mississippi or Texas; and your residence
was damaged by Hurricanes Katrina or Rita, you may apply for a $1,000
assistance grant. Funds are limited for this first-come-first-serve program.

Visits H.E.R.O. Pilot Site

General
Wesley Clark (right) visits with veteran Shelby Bowling at his home
in Hamilton, Ohio.
|
|
Retired U.S. General
Wesley Clark, Chairman of Project H.E.R.O., met last month with Vietnam
veteran Shelby Bowling to discuss plans to make his home accessible through
the ICCF Project H.E.R.O. program.
Project
H.E.R.O.— Homes Eliminated of Restrictions and Obstaclesbrings together
local building officials, architects, engineers, businesses and other volunteers
to help make veterans' homes accessible when they return from duty. Bowling
suffers from diabetes and must use a motorized scooter to maneuver through
his home. His home in Hamilton, Ohio, does not have an accessible entrance
and his bedroom and bathroom are on the second floor—limiting his ability
to access half of his home.
The
Project H.E.R.O. renovation plans for Bowling's home include an addition
with an accessible entrance, a bedroom and a bathroom valued at $80,000.

Association of Greater Grand Rapids for their recent donations

Building Safety Week:
Something for Everyone
ICC's
annual Building Safety Week, scheduled for May 7-13, will once again host
a wide array of national and local programs that demonstrate the importance
of making homes and buildings safe places for people to live, work and
play.
For
building safety and fire prevention personnel, this is a week of awareness;
a unique opportunity to share and educate communities about building safety.
For the general public, Building Safety Week is a time to learn important
information about a wide range of community issues—from mold prevention
and disaster preparedness to the benefits of building codes. Of course,
there is always something for the kids. One of the most popular items
is the CODiE the Cougar's Building Safety Activity Book published
by ICCF.
