Four organizations were granted chapter status by the Code Council’s Board of Directors on May 19. Two associations each bring more than 2,000 members from the fire and emergency service fields. The third is a newly formed group of diverse officials from New Hampshire, and the last education-oriented association hails from New York. Check out our newest Chapters.

First Chapters Join Code Council on the Hill
Representatives of the 2006 Chapter of the Year and Chapter Merit Award winners were treated to something very special this year. They became the first group of Chapter officers brought to Washington, D.C. to formally participate in Capitol Hill Day during Building Safety Week. Chapter leaders joined the Council delegation and took on the role of Congressional advocate with relish and enthusiasm as they expanded the Council’s outreach on Capitol Hill. The meetings focused on building support for the Council’s Community Building Code Administration Grant Program and 2007 Legislative Initiative.
Support from chapters will play a pivotal role in building grassroots support for this initiative at the state and local levels. Read more on the Chapter officers’ activities, as well as the unique personal perspectives from chapter leaders who participated.
Taken on the rooftop of the Council's new Headquarters office, located just blocks from the Capitol, Chapter officers unwind after a busy day advocating for the Council's Community Building Code Administration Grant program. Pictured are Roger Axel (left), Association of Minnesota Building Officials (2006 Merit Award); Sheila Lee, California Building Officials (2006 Chapter of the Year); Kurt Kasson, North Texas Chapter (2006 Merit Award); Paul Aston, Idaho Association of Building Officials (2006 Merit Award); Tina Rakes, Heart of America Chapter (2006 Merit Award); and Vice President of Chapter Relations Laura Scott.
A Memorable Event for Chapters
Every year in June, New England chapters roll out the red carpet for the Code Council’s Board of Directors and staff during the legendary New England Tour. Attendees talk “code” while dining on local seafood specialties. This year’s Code Council group made a fast-paced dash across New England, meeting nine chapters in four days. Of the many memorable events, Connecticut Association of Housing Code Enforcement Officials Past President John C. Watson, Sr.’s speech “Are You a Professional?” resonated with many on the issue of code uniformity and the statewide adoption of a model property maintenance code.
Members of the New Hampshire and Maine chapters graciously played host to Code Council representatives during this year’s New England Tour. The ICC contingent included CEO Rick Weiland, Board President Wally Bailey, Board Immediate Past President Henry Green, Board Secretary/Treasurer Adolf Zubia and Government Relations Senior Vice President Sara Yerkes.
Flush Pheasants in South Dakota
While Mount Rushmore may be South Dakota’s top tourist attraction, small game hunters know the state offers outstanding pheasant hunting. The South Dakota Building Officials Association (SDBOA) is hosting a pheasant hunt, November 2–4, near Winner, South Dakota. Open to all Chapter members, availability is limited to 25 hunters on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“We’re excited to host the first of what we hope will be an annual event,” said SDBOA member Ron Bell, Sioux Falls Chief Building Official and past ICC Code Official of the Year. “South Dakota is known for its pheasant hunting and this promises to be an exceptional opportunity to enjoy the sport and the wide-open spaces of South Dakota.”
Estimated cost is $625 per person and includes meals and lodging for Friday–Saturday night. Transportation is not included. For details, contact Ron Bell at (605) 367-8673.
How to Build Your Website
For some chapters, building a website can be a daunting task. With so many vendors and options, many chapters are left wondering where to begin. If you are one of those chapters, take heart because we have done the leg work on websites so you won’t have to.
A presentation on how to design a winning website that meets chapter needs on content, style, format, features, maintenance and cost is now available upon request.
