VA Seeks Inspector
for SAH Projects
The Veterans Administration (VA) seeks individuals to perform inspections for compliance with Special Adapted Housing (SAH) requirements on residential construction projects for disabled veterans. Inspectors are needed in all areas of the state of Ohio. Application fees range from $150-$200 with an additional $20 fee available depending on the locations of the inspections. Pool and Spa Safety
Act Enacted into Law

Congress has approved the “Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.” The legislation promotes child safety in and around pools‚ spas and hot tubs by establishing a grant program for states to be administered by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. To be eligible‚ states would be required to enact laws adhering to safety guidelines in the new federal law. Safety education is also emphasized. Read more.

International Code Council History
In 1994‚ three legacy model code organizations created the International Code Council to develop a single set of comprehensive‚ coordinated model construction codes for use throughout the United States and around the world.
On January 21‚ 2003‚ documents are signed authorizing the Council to operate as a single association. To see more selected historical dates‚ click here.

The Code Council is accepting applications for its Code Action Committees. Three new code-discipline-specific committees identify opportunities to improve and enhance a particular International Code‚ or code sections‚ by submitting proposed code changes, modifications and public comments‚ and by participating in the Code Development process. The application deadline is February 8. Apply now.

With the increasing trend toward urban renewal‚ revitalization of old town centers and the surge of interest in green building‚ an old debate recently heated up again. If the building code for new construction is intended (as stated in the 2006 IBC) to establish “minimum requirements to safeguard the public health‚ safety and general welfare” (Section 101.3)‚ how can application of a code for existing buildings provide a lower level of safety and still be considered acceptable?

Code Question of the Week
 
Q: The occupant load of the second floor of a two-story‚ fully sprinklered building is 500 and required to have two means-of-egress stairs. Is one of the two required means-of-egress stairs permitted to be only 44" wide (220 capacity)‚ as prescribed in Section 1009.1 of the 2006 International Building Code‚ if the capacity of the other stair is 280 occupants (56" wide)?
