CBCAG Support Sought on the Hill

Code Council staff met with Congressional leaders last week seeking support for the proposed Community Building Code Administration Grant Act of 2007 (CBCAG)‚ which would provide $100 million over five years to help local governments hire‚ train and equip code officials‚ including building and fire inspectors.
Tragedy in the Tornado-Ravaged South

The Code Council extends its deepest sympathy to those affected by last week’s devastating tornadoes. At least 59 people perished in storms that struck in Tennessee‚ Arkansas‚ Kentucky and Alabama. Hundreds were injured in those states and in Mississippi.
More than 190 homes were destroyed in the city of Lafayette‚ Tennessee‚ a Code Council Governmental Member. “We are now in full-scale‚ clean-up mode‚” LaFayette Fire Chief and Macon County Emergency Management Director Keith Scruggs told the Macon County Times on Sunday. “Volunteers are coming in droves to sign up‚ but we need to wait until mid-week before we can let private individuals or groups out in the most severely damaged areas.”
Disaster Mitigation Initiatives Discussed
Code Council CEO Rick Weiland and staff met last week with representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Disaster Mitigation group. The Council and FEMA are collaborating on a number of initiatives involving Emergency Management Assistance Compacts‚ FEMA’s participation in the I-Code development process and post-disaster involvement of code officials.
