Correction
An inaccuracy appeared in a Jan. 2006 eNews story regarding
the Illinois Energy Code. The correct information is the Illinois
Energy Efficient Commercial Building Act includes adoption of the
2000 IECC with the 2001 IECC Supplement. |

Sample
Ordinances Streamline Code Adoptions
Jurisdictions
wishing to adopt the 2006 I-Codes should ensure that certain facts and
information are included in the ordinance when the adoption is being considered
by the appropriate governmental body. To help in the process, free sample
ordinances for adopting the 2006 I-Codes are now available online to address
the key elements of a code adoption ordinance.
Click
here to download free sample ordinances for any of the new I-Codes.
I-Codes
Reduce Consumer Costs and Concern
Consumers'
wallets are just one of the winners as more U.S. jurisdictions update,
adopt and enforce the I-Codes. Studies indicate that every dollar spent
on building safer and stronger, on average, reduces losses from high wind
damage, floods, earthquakes and other disasters by $4. Other economic
benefits can include energy savings, reduced maintenance costs, lower
insurance premiums and fewer safety concerns. For a complete list of jurisdictions
that use the I-Codes, click
here.
Adoption
Toolkit Keeps Users Well-Informed
Containing
briefing papers on technical issues, samples of ordinances, endorsements
and support materials from national organizations, ICC's free online Code
Adoption Toolkit is a helpful resource for code users. A Background section
includes a listing of ICC offices and staff members across the country
who can help answer questions about ICC's many products and services,
and help with code adoption efforts, as well as an extensive F.A.Q. section.

ICC
Satisfies Demand for Spanish Codes
A worldwide
demand for the I-Codes in Spanish-speaking communities has resulted in
ICC undertaking the considerable task of publishing the I-Codes in Spanish.
ICC is nearing completion on nine Spanish 2003 I-Codes, including the
IPC, IMC, IFGC, IRC, IBC, IFC, IECC, IEBC and IPMC. The codes will ensure
access to construction methods, systems and their interpretations, as
well as their correct application, and can also be adapted to local conditions
in Latin America.

Cosponsors Disaster-Recovery Conference
The opening plenary session
of the Restoration 2006: Community and Economic Recovery after a Disaster
conference will be kicked off with a speech by ICC CEO James Lee Witt.
Drawing on his 25-plus years of disaster management experience, Witt will
provide his thoughts on building a disaster-resistant America. The conference
is cosponsored by ICC and focuses on community and economic recovery in
the wake of natural and manmade disasters.
Honor
Veterans and Silent Defenders
Held
annually during Building Safety Week, the ICC Foundation's (ICCF) Project
H.E.R.O roll-out breakfast and Silent Defender Awards dinner honor extraordinary
individuals. Project H.E.R.O. breakfast attendees will get a first look
at pilot sites and future projects, while being able to give back to the
disabled military veterans that have sacrificed for us. The program, which
helps disabled veterans remodel their homes for easier accessibility,
will be introduced to political leaders and building industry professionals.
Those who have tirelessly worked to improve public safety, health and
welfare will be honored by ICCF Chairman James Lee Witt at the
Silent Defender Awards Dinner. Awards will be presented to U.S. Congressman
Ted Stevens (R-AK), the Inter-American Development Bank, U.S. Representative
Jo Ann Davis (R-VA-1st District), Dr. Omaima Ahmad Salah El-Din (Egypt),
and The Home Depot for their efforts.
Both events take place on May 11 in Washington D.C. Attendees of the awards
dinner may also attend the rollout breakfast at no additional cost. Tickets
and sponsorship opportunities are available. Click
here for reservation information.
New
Certification Aids Coastal Communities
On the heels of the devastating hurricane season, a new Coastal
Construction Flood Plain Inspector Certification brings an added layer
of protection to coastal developments and communities with designated
flood plain zones. Becoming certified as a Coastal Construction Flood
Plain Inspector helps to protect public safety by ensuring that inspectors
are in place to deal with flooding, hurricanes and other catastrophic
events.
Certified individuals will be able to inspect coastal homes and businesses
to ensure that they meet code requirements, including special requirements
in high wind zones. These inspectors also will be able to quickly and
effectively assess damage to determine the safety and stability of homes
and businesses.
For more information, call 1-888-ICC-SAFE (422-7233) ext. 33806, or download
the National
Examination Bulletin.
ICCF
Offers Scholarships for Children
Giving the gift that
lasts a lifetime, the ICCF Scholarship Foundation hosts five sponsored and
two managed scholarships for children of employees of active ICC Governmental
members. Established to support the advancement of building and fire safety,
raise public awareness, and honor those essential to the formation of the
ICC, its legacy organizations or chapters, applications for the 2006 Scholarship
Program are now available and being accepted.
The deadline for sponsored applications is June 30, and the deadlines for
managed applications are March 15 and April 15. Click
here for more information or to download an application.
Encourage
Building Safety with New Kits
Promoting
building safety to a wide range of the community is easy and affordable
with ICCF's new Building Safety Week (BSW) campaign kits. The updated
kits include posters, code and building permit brochures, disaster preparedness
information, as well as coloring books, pencils and stickers for the kids.
Two great new resources in this year's kit include flashy new children’s
stickers and instructive public service announcements for local TV or
cable stations. Of course, the ever-popular CODiE the Cougar's Building
Safety Activity Book is available, which includes coloring and activity
pages to teach children about building safety issues.
Orders for BSW materials must be placed by April 15. To purchase these
great resources, click
here.
Weigh
in on Disaster Preparedness
In continually promoting
a culture of safety, this year's Building Safety Week survey addresses disaster
preparedness. Last year, more than 400 code officials across the country
participated in the survey and illustrated why codes and inspections are
so important in saving lives and protecting property.
Your opinion is important. Click
here to take part in the survey. Participants will be sent the results.
