WTC 9/11 investigation could result in new generation of building and fire codes

New YorkThe International Code Council® will use its code development process to address building safety and fire prevention code issues raised in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) World Trade Center 9/11 investigation.

“NIST has done an important public service by conducting this comprehensive study,” CEO James Lee Witt said. “The International Code Council intends to fully review its findings as it strives to continue to improve building safety and protect lives and property.”

I-Codes reflect lessons learned from past tragedies

2003 IFCThrough its code development process, ICC® continues to address many of the issues raised in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) two-year investigation of a deadly nightclub fire.

ICC members approved a code change to require sprinkler systems in all nightclubs with an occupancy of 100 or more people or larger than 5,000 square feet. The previous occupancy requirement was 300. The code change is included in the 2004 Supplement to the 2003 International Codes®.

The I-Codes also address several other recommendations in the NIST report. Click here to read more.

Help recognize building safety heroes

It is not often that special recognition is given to building safety heroes in our nation’s capital. That’s why the International Code Council Foundation (ICCF) proudly invites building and fire safety representatives to attend the first annual Silent Defender Awards Dinner on May 11 in Washington, D.C.

James Lee Witt, the Foundation’s Chairman and CEO of ICC, will present the awards. Honorees include Congressman Curt Weldon of Pennsylvania, Congressman Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, Fire Marshal George Sacco of O’Hara Township, Pennsylvania, and the World Bank.

The Silent Defender Awards recognize individuals and organizations that perform extraordinary acts that demonstrate a commitment to building stronger, safer communities.

Earn professional ICC-CALBO certification on the California Codes

Code officials will soon be able to earn California Code certifications through ICC and the California Building Officials (CALBO). The two organizations have joined forces to create a new program specifically for California.

"This new program will serve our membership and public safety in California by testing officials on the actual code requirements used in the state," said ICC Vice President of Certification and Licensing David Nelson.

With the new International Code Council-CALBO Certification, candidates will be tested on the California Code of Regulations, Title 24, which references the Uniform Codes®, the National Electrical Code® and the California amendments. Amendments make up approximately 5–10 percent of the code.

IASSM launches program to accredit IBC® inspection agencies

IASInternational Accreditation Service (IAS) recently launched a program to accredit agencies involved in conducting Special Inspections under Chapter 17 of the International Building Code® (IBC). IAS staff, together with a team of technical experts in concrete, masonry, fireproofing, soils and foundations, structural steel welding, non-destructive testing and high-strength bolting, recently conducted the first round of assessments of agencies that perform special inspections for the city of Las Vegas, Nevada.

The IAS program is the first of its type in the United States to provide services to building jurisdictions that involve actual site visits to determine the competency of special inspectors and to determine if proper inspection protocol is being followed. For more IAS news, click here.
