homes of disabled veterans more accessible, Vietnam veteran Shelby Bowling's
home was chosen as the pilot site for the new ICCF Project H.E.R.O. (Homes
Eliminated of Restrictions and Obstacles) program. Chairman General Wesley
Clark (ret.) visited Bowling to review the renovation plans that include
an addition with an accessible entrance, a bedroom and a bathroom. Read

ICC COO Rick Weiland
gave a presentation to the Western States Seismic Policy Council (WSSPC)
Board of Directors during the organization’s Annual Conference this week
in San Francisco. He was joined by ICC Structural Engineer John Henry,
who presented copies of the 2006 International Existing Building Code
and the Seismic CodeMaster produced by S.K. Ghosh Associates.
The WSSPC event was held in conjunction with the 100th
Anniversary Earthquake Conference Commemorating the 1906 San Francisco Earthquakeone
of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history.
This relationship has led to WSSPCs participation in ICCs 2007

In its continuing sponsorship
of the Center for Campus Fire Safety (CCFS), ICC presented a check for $5,000
to the Center for its efforts in raising awareness of fire risks on America’s
college campuses. The Center’s coalition of interests, including ICC, is
currently at work in Congress to promote adoption of the Campus Fire Safety
Right-to-Know Act—under consideration in the Senate as S.2493. Read

FLASH
Welcomes Weiland to Board
An increase in natural and man-made disasters has made it imperative that
organizations like the Federal
Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) and ICC work closely to educate the
public, ease the effects on communities, and protect lives and property.
To this effect, ICC COO Rick Weiland has been named to the Board
of Directors for FLASH.
“I am honored to be selected for this position,” said Weiland. “I look
forward to working with FLASH and its Board to address important building
safety issues.”

Raises Committee on Wall Bracing
In response to concerns raised about the wall-bracing provisions in the
International Residential Code, ICC has established an Ad Hoc Committee
on Wall Bracing to review the provisions, determine necessary revisions
and propose changes. The application deadline is May 5, and interested
parties may submit an application online. Read

Green Speaks at Green Expo
ICC President Henry Green was a keynote speaker during the National
Association of Home Builder's (NAHB) eighth annual National Green Building
Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, March 12-14. The conference
featured topics such as green development, marketing, water management
and indoor air quality. "It is ICCs responsibility and duty
to bring our history, resources and understanding of the development of
codes and standards to facilitate the development of standards with NAHB
and others," stated Green. Read

Interest
in Contractor Exams Increases
ICC now develops and administers customized construction trade licensing
exams for hundreds of state and municipal jurisdictions. The most widely
used licensing exams include the residential and building contractor examinations—master
and journeyman plumbing, electrical, gas and mechanical. The contractor/trades
exams are administered at more than 1,200 approved test sites nationwide
and include toll-free telephone support and test scheduling. Read

Grant Funds Free Workshops
Thanks to a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant,
ICC and the United Spinal Association will be able to ensure that more
apartments and condominiums are built accessible to people with disabilities.
The two organizations are offering free workshops on the Fair Housing
Act requirements, regulations and accessibility guidelines, and the ICC/ANSI

Reimbursed for Fees
Recognizing the importance of certification in employment and career advancement,
the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a program to reimburse select
ICC Professional Certification Exam fees for qualified military personnel.

Solicits Members for New Committee
The Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) is soliciting members for a
new Standards Committee that will review, update and complete the Independent
Project Peer Review Standard No. 22-97. Structural consulting engineers,
