this week's Restoration 2006: Community and Economic Recovery After a Disaster
Conference being held in New Orleans. The conference focuses on long-term
and sustainable community and economic recovery in the aftermath of a natural
or man-made disaster.
ICC CEO James Lee Witt joined New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin as a speaker during

on how strong building codes protect lives and property and the importance
of continuity of fire and rescue services.
IHPA
sponsoring Hurricane Protection Zone
COO
Rick Weiland has brokered an agreement with the International Hurricane
Protection Association (IHPA) and Hurricane Protection magazine
to sponsor a Hurricane Protection Zone at this year’s Annual Conference
in Orlando, Florida. The special area will be located inside the ICC Expo
and feature products that focus on home safety during hurricanes.
Since IHPA is Florida-based, some of the group’s vendors are expected
to participate in the ICC Expo and be located in the zone. The agreement
also calls for IHPA and ICC to become members of the respective organizations.

With the construction
season underway, the International Code Council and several City of Chicago
Departments launched Building Safety Week 2006, which annually recognizes
the importance of making homes
and buildings safe places where
people can live, work and play. The week's many events raised public awareness
of building safety by promoting the use, enforcement and understanding of
building safety and fire prevention codes to protect lives and property.
ICC recognized the many "Silent Defenders" who work to ensure safety in
the built environment at a Washington, D.C. dinner. Disabled
military veterans were
honored at a Project H.E.R.O.
breakfast. ICC's Board and Government Relations Advisory
Committee met
with members of Congress during Capitol Hill Day to discuss ICC's legislative
priorities. Building departments across America heralded BSW with activities,
proclamations and press coverage. Click
