Town
Hall Meeting Seeks Member Input
Planning is underway
for a national Town Hall meeting in Denver, Colorado, to update ICC and
IAPMO members and stakeholders on plans to create single plumbing and single
mechanical codes. The July 15 meeting will address the code development
process for developing a new plumbing code, how the codes will affect members
and code users, organizational implications, certification and training,

World Headquarters Moving to D.C.

ICC's
new headquarters office is located in the newly constructed “green”
NAR building.
|
To raise the profile
of building safety and fire prevention professionals, and the organization
as a public safety advocate, ICC will move its world headquarters office
to Washington, D.C., from Falls Church, Virginia.
“This move symbolizes
the importance of building safety to thousands of our members and the untiring
commitment of building and fire officials, who protect our communities as
silent defenders,” said ICC COO Rick Weiland.

Weiland and the design
team have finalized a lease agreement with the National Association of Realtors
(NAR) for substantial space at 500 New Jersey Avenue. Space plans for the
new office are under design and the build out should be complete by the
end of the year. The office will be located just a few blocks from the U.S.
Capitol.

Ready for Hurricane Season

Last
year, the DRN had over 200 code enforcement volunteers.
|
The probability of at
least one major hurricane reaching landfall during the 2006 season is 47
percent, according to the Atmospheric Science Department at Colorado State
University. ICC is prepared for the months ahead with its streamlined Disaster
Response Network (DRN)—a pool of volunteers to quickly and efficiently help
building and fire departments with code-related functions after a natural

Discovers Dust Explosion Culpability

fueled a CTA Acoustics plant explosion in Corbin, Kentucky. |
The U.S. Chemical Safety
and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) released its investigative findings
of a CTA Acoustics explosion and fire that fatally injured seven workers.
CSB discovered that CTA did not communicate the hazard of combustible dust

Communities after Disaster Strikes
Bring
an added layer of protection to communities with ICC’s new Disaster
Response Inspector Certification, or Coastal
Construction Flood Plain Inspector Certification. Disaster Response
Inspectors can determine if structures are unsafe, damaged, or approved
for continued legal occupancy following an emergency or natural disaster.
Coastal communities with designated flood plain zones will benefit from
inspectors who can quickly and effectively assess damage to determine
the safety and stability of homes and businesses.

Argentina and Jamaica listened intently as ICC Government Relations International
Liaison Sylvana Ricciarini spoke on the importance of building codes as
a tool for risk mitigation before the Organization of American States’ (OAS)
Joint Consultative Forum on Natural Disaster Reduction and Risk Management.
The presentation was praised as informative and timely given the disaster
risk-reduction discussions that OAS and the international community have

Father
of Modern Fire Protection Honored
For leadership and devotion to the improvement of fire protection engineering
and the reduction of building fire threats to lives and property, Harold
"Bud" Nelson was presented the American Association of Engineering Societies'
National Engineering Award. Nelson’s career has spanned more than 50 years,
and he has been recognized as "the most influential fire protection engineer

Paper Addresses Home Smoke Alarms
Working smoke alarms greatly reduce the risk of fire death at home by
providing occupants with early warning, giving them valuable time to escape.
The Fire Safety Council has prepared a white paper, Home Smoke Alarms
and Other Fire Detection and Alarm Equipment, to help reduce the annual

receiving 31 incident reports of fires, property damage and injuries,
Nexgrill Industries announced a voluntary recall of about 16,000 Nexgrill
