Final Report Available
The Final Report of the Code Council's Governance Review Ad-Hoc Committee is available for download from the Code Council website. Committee recommendations include changes to the Board’s structure, conduct of elections and the nominating process, as well as creation of two public interest positions and a new council for international activities. The committee's report will be considered by the membership at the 2007 Annual Conference in Reno, Nevada. |

New California Codes Unveiled
After an extensive public process, the California state agencies concluded their review and determined that the 2006 International Building Code, International Fire Code and International Existing Building Code would be the base for the 2007 California Codes. On January 16 and 30, the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC) voted unanimously to approve and adopt the proposed rulemaking by the state agencies. California was officially introduced to the new 2007 California Building, Fire and Existing Building Codes on July 19. The Code Council conducted a training event to highlight changes relating to non-structural, structural and fire provisions, and afterwards participated in the CBSC Green Building Forum. |

Alabama Adopts I-Codes
The state of Alabama and city of Pasadena, Texas, are the latest jurisdictions to adopt the I-Codes.
With recent adoptions in California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Utah, the I-Codes are now safeguarding Americans in more than 21,000 jurisdictions nationwide. |

Key stakeholders convened for a second Raising the Profile of the Code Official Summit at Code Council Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Hosted by the Code Council, this “Founders” meeting brought together industry association representatives to discuss the formation of a coalition to promote the important role code officials play in making everyday life safer. Key goals include changing public perceptions by connecting the impact codes have on safety and demonstrating that enforcement is necessary to save lives and protect property.
Associations participating in the second summit included the American Association of Code Enforcement, Institute of Business and Home Safety, International Association of Electrical Inspectors, International Association of Fire Chiefs–Fire and Life Safety Section, International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, International City/County Management Association and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association.

ICC Board Modifies Call for Sprinkler Committee
The International Code Council Board of Directors has voted unanimously to ‘Not appoint the Committee at this time based on current market based efforts.’ This decision is in response to indications that the interests that the Board thought to bring together through the mechanism of an Ad Hoc committee were already working together independently to ‘…identify and overcome barriers to residential sprinklers.’ Additionally the Board was concerned about the limited time frame for the committee to develop proposals by the August 20th Code Change submittal deadline as well as assuring a complete balance of interests in a committee of 15-20 people. |

With the adoption of New York City's new construction codes last month, which include many post-9/11 high-rise building egress requirements, this month's free article focuses on elevators and egress requirements in the 2006 International Building Code.
The use of elevators has historically been prohibited during emergencies. However, with elevator-assisted evacuation now being allowed in several countries, the subject bears a closer look. |

| More than 30 organizations participated in the two-day Blue Ribbon Panel on the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). The Council hosted the panel’s first meeting June 25-26 that reviewed current programs and their effectiveness against the increasing number of WUI fires. The panel also discussed organizational accomplishments and the importance of collaboration. Senator Max Baucus of Montana voiced his support for the Blue Ribbon Panel on WUI fires, “This panel will help to provide valuable insight and dialogue on wildfires and public land management," said Baucus, "issues of critical importance to Montanans.” |

Sustainability has become a hot topic and the Green Codes Summit in Washington, D.C., allowed federal agencies, green building advocates, and codes and standards developers to communicate their efforts and coordinate future activities. Cosponsored by the Code Council and the American Institute of Architects, the Summit brought together representatives from all parts of the green building industry. Council Technical Services SVP Tom Frost was a speaker at the event and explained how the Council's code development process is the best tool available for implementing green changes in communities. Frost invited attendees to become involved in the code development process by submitting proposed changes before the August 20 deadline.

| The Code Council and the Egyptian government's Housing and Building National Research Centre (HBRC) have signed an agreement to establish a national inspector training and certification program in Egypt. The Council's U.S. training and certification program serves as a model for construction inspectors within Egypt in the areas of structural concrete; plumbing; fire; heating, ventilating and air conditioning/mechanical; and electrical inspection. |
