Yaman Uzumeri Award
Goes to Bailey

For his continued contribution and devotion to the building regulatory industry, Code Council Board President Wally Bailey is this year's recipient of the Ontario Building Officials Association's (OBOA) prestigious Yaman Uzumeri International Award of Excellence. The award is presented to an individual, corporation or association who has furthered the professional excellence of the building regulatory industry. Bailey will be honored on September 24 at the OBOA Annual Meeting in Ottawa, Canada.

Mutual Initiatives Discussed with PHCC
Code Council CEO Rick Weiland, Executive Director of Plumbing and Mechanical Activities Jay Peters and Government Relations SVP Sara Yerkes met with officials from the Plumbing Heating and Cooling Contractors (PHCC) National Association in Washington, D.C. The parties discussed mutual initiatives and avenues in which both organizations can work together.

Permit Technicians First Certified in State
Mississippi building permit technicians first in state to earn
Code Council certification.

Ruth Preston and Victoria Pepitone are two Pearl River County Permit Technicians with the Planning and Development Department that have received International Code Council certification. Along with one technician in Vicksburg, they are the first people in Mississippi to pass the written exam for permit technicians. The two-hour, 60-question exam covered material on four topics: Basic Code Enforcement, International Building Codes, Legal Aspects of Building Codes, and International Zoning.
Preston, whose first anniversary with the county falls at the end of July, said, “I was surprised when I learned I was one of only three. I’m humbled by it. I’m proud that we’ve accomplished this.”
Council Hosts Russian Delegation

Code Council staff hosted a delegation from the Russian Far East visiting through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration as part of the Special American Business Internship Training program. With a particular interest in energy efficiency in construction, the delegation received a tour of the Council’s LEED-certified Headquarters building, along with an overview of the International Energy Conservation Code and new National Green Building Standard currently under development.

Hampton University Receives I-Codes
Council Board Vice President Steve Shapiro presented copies of the International Codes to Hampton University's Department of Architecture in Virginia. The Council is working with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to place a complete set of I-Codes in the libraries of AIA-accredited schools of architecture.

Transforming Egyptian Public Safety

The Code Council signed contracts with Housing and Building National Research Center (HBRC) officials of the Arab Republic of Egypt to jointly sponsor national training and certification of building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and fire inspectors in Egypt. The International Accreditation Service awarded the first testing laboratory accreditations in Egypt to the HBRC Materials Testing Laboratory and Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Laboratory.
Council Attends BOMA Centennial Celebration

Code Council representatives attended The BOMA Congress and The Office Building Show in New York City. Council Board President Wally Bailey presented BOMA International officials with a plaque in honor of the organization’s centennial celebration. He was joined by Council Board Vice President Steve Shapiro and COO Dominic Sims at several other conference events, including a tour of the reconstructed World Trade Center building number 7, privately constructed after 9/11. The reconstructed building contains what some believe are some of the safest high-rise features in the world. The building stands within the Port Authority. The State of New York along with New York City now base their building and fire safety requirements on the I-Codes (see city’s new construction guidelines).
