Development of hurricane resistant
construction standard begins
In the weeks before Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan devastated parts of the Southeast and Caribbean, an ICC committee convened to develop the ICC Standard on Hurricane Resistant Construction. The ICC Consensus Committee on Hurricane Resistant Construction's challenge is to create a prescriptive standard that improves wind resistance while keeping construction affordable in hurricane-prone areas.

map
The ICC Standard on Hurricane Resistant Construction is the descendent of the Standard for Hurricane Resistant Residential Construction, also known as SSTD 10, originally developed by the Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI).

Developing requirements for
new building products
New building products and technologies are constantly being developed. When there are no clear requirements in the code for new products and methods, the Evaluation Committee of ICC Evaluation Service, Inc., approves acceptance criteria used to evaluate new products.

class
You are invited to attend the next ICC-ES Evaluation Committee meeting, October 6–8, in Birmingham, Alabama, to learn how acceptance criteria are developed and, if you wish, to participate in the open hearing process. No registration is required to attend the meeting. For more information, click here.
Get help verifying that fabricators
meet code requirements
Building departments and construction specifiers can get help from the International Accreditation Service (IAS), at no cost, to verify if structural steel and concrete fabricators are up to code.

A subsidiary of ICC, the IAS evaluates and accredits fabricator inspection programs for compliance with Section 1704.2.2 of the International Building Code. Structural steel and concrete fabricators that have registered their inspection programs and have been accredited by IAS are listed on the Internet at www.iasonline.org.

class
The decision to approve a fabricator is ultimately up the building department in the jurisdiction where the work will be performed. However, IAS helps building officials and construction specifiers make their decisions by providing a list of accredited fabricators that comply with code-based accreditation criteria and whose fabrication processes, personnel and quality systems have undergone on-site verification.

The International Code Council
Foundation plans for future
Does that sound different to you? It should since the ICC subsidiary was once known as the Building A Safer World Foundation.

Along with the new name, the International Code Council Foundation (ICCF) has created a new business plan to guide its strategic development efforts. A new Board of Governors is in development that will include representatives from influential corporate, political and financial circles. ICC Chief Executive Officer James Lee Witt serves as the Chairman of the ICCF Board that will consist of representatives in four segments: Governors, who will provide policy oversight; Foundation Advisory members, who will lend name support and influence; Technical Advisory members, who will provide expertise for implementing programmatic goals; and International Directors, who will facilitate international activities.

ICCF
ICC believes this structure will result in a far reaching, effective, and eventually influential Foundation. Operating globally, the ICCF is dedicated to changing the devastating effects of natural disasters and other building tragedies by promoting ideas, methods and technologies that encourage the construction of durable, sustainable buildings and homes. ICCF's tagline is Together—Building A Safer World.
