Raising the Profile of Code Officials
The adoption and enforcement of contemporary codes has dramatically improved the level of safety in buildings. To maintain and enhance the level of safety America has today, a national “Raise the Profile” coalition will undertake the goal to educate the public, industry and elected officials about the critical role code officials play in improving the level of safety in the built environment.

More than 90 percent of the 44,000 U.S. communities at risk for wildfires do not have adequate protection plans, according to a panel organized by the Code Council and other public safety organizations. Significant 2006 I-Code Changes
A number of significant changes to the 2006 I-Codes were approved during the Final Action Hearings in Rochester, New York. To help you keep up, Code Council technical staff have compiled a handy breakdown of significant changes for the 2007 Supplement to the International Codes.
Kentucky Moves to 2006 I-Codes
The state of Kentucky upgraded its state codes in July. The 2007 Kentucky Building Code, based on the 2006 International Building Code with state amendments, has a grace period for review until September 30. The 2007 Kentucky Residential Code, based on the 2006 International Residential Code with state amendments, has a grace period until October 31. Kentucky will not publish state-specific codes for the 2007 editions.
Clinton Chooses 2006 IPC
The city council of Clinton, Iowa, adopted the 2006 International Plumbing Code as the last piece of the city’s building code. The decision was the final part of the process to adopt an overall building code that the Iowa Legislature mandated for Clinton by July 1, 2008. Has your jurisdiction adopted any of the I-Codes? Video Highlights Use of I-Codes
An online video promoting the quality of life in Hurricane, West Virginia, highlights the jurisdiction’s use of the Code Council’s I-Codes. “Code enforcement and building regulations that meet the International Code Council ensure the best neighborhood environment and safe housing,” the video states.
Updated Building Valuation Data
The Building Valuation Data (BVD) has been updated and is available for jurisdictions and other parties to utilize in current code-enforcement-related activities. The next BVD update will be in February 2008.
Green Standard Draft Ready for Review
Public comment for the first draft of the National Association of Home Builders/International Code Council Green Building Standard closes September 24. A second public comment period will start in October.

I-Codes Donated to MSU

The Code Council presented a set of I-Codes to faculty and students of the Mississippi State University (MSU) College of Architecture, Art and Design Convocation. The presentation is part of a joint effort with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to place a complete set of I-Codes in the libraries of AIA-accredited schools of architecture.
Support for Charleston’s Fallen Firefighters
The Code Council is working with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to provide support to the Charleston, South Carolina, Fire Department following the loss of nine firefighters in a warehouse fire this summer. Council Government Relations Deputy Senior Vice President Jim Tidwell is coordinating support activities for department members and their families.
Shedding Light on "Silent Death" of Children
In an effort to help curb drowning deaths of young children in Southern Nevada, Code Council Board member Ron Lynn filmed a public service announcement on the necessity of pool barriers for the South Nevada Health District’s "ABCDs of Drowning Prevention" campaign.
Berkel Receives Prestigious Honor

Code Council Board member Ed Berkel received the Edward M. Vineyard Award from the Fire Marshals Association of Missouri (FMAM) at its recent annual conference. The award—the highest honor presented by FMAM—is presented to an individual, group or department whose outstanding efforts have furthered the cause of fire prevention and public fire education throughout the State of Missouri.
Council to Develop Afghanistan Codes

The Code Council is developing a custom building safety system for Afghanistan’s Department of National Building Codes and Regulations. Contracts Manager Darren Meyers and project partners from the Pragma Corporation traveled to Afghanistan to meet with the Minister of Urban Development and other officials.
