A Day to Meet World Standards
World Standards Day
ASTM President Jim Thomas (left) talks standards with ICC Government Relations Sr. VP Sara Yerkes, ICC CEO Richard P. Weiland and ICC Board President Wally Bailey during the 2006 WSD reception.

To raise awareness on the importance of standards to the global economy, ICC and the standards community gathered in Washington, D.C., to celebrate World Standards Day. This year’s theme, “Standards Build Partnerships,” tied in with the 10-year anniversary of the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act, which promotes the use of voluntary standards in lieu of the federal government developing its own separate standards.

“Standards are every place,” said U.S. Mission Ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and former U.S. Congresswoman for Maryland Ambassador Constance A. Morella. “They build networks, they build opportunity, they build prosperity. We all know that the language of international commerce is standards.” Morella was also honored with the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award.

Schutz Has an Earthshaking Hawaiian Experience
Bob Schutz
Bob Schutz
ICC Manager of Instructors Bob Schutz, of Westerville, Ohio, had a training assignment last week that many people would envy. He headed to Kona, Hawaii, on the Big Island, to conduct two seminars for the American Institute of Architects. Schutz arrived Thursday and taught the IRC and IBC fundamentals seminars all day Friday and Saturday. Saturday night, he departed to Honolulu, checked into a hotel room on the twenty-sixth floor and went to sleep.

Schutz awakened to a shaking, rolling motion at 7:07 Sunday morning. There was a rainstorm going on so he couldn’t tell what was happening at first. But then the building swayed sideways for about 20 to 30 seconds. Seven minutes later he felt it again. Read more about Schutz’s earthquake experiences in Hawaii.
