Raising the Profile of Someone You Know

 
Nominations are now being accepted for the new Code Council Raising the Profile Award. Deadline for nominations is January 4. The Raising the Profile Award will be given to an individual or organization whose acts or contributions have raised the public awareness of the work accomplished by code enforcement personnel to improve public safety in the built environment. Get the details and download the nomination form. The award will be presented during the 2008 Building Safety Week activities.

 

Preparing for the Future
Interoperability Study Examines Software and Platforms

 
McGraw-Hill Construction recently released a SmartMarket Report on Interoperability for the building industry. Sponsored by nine industry associations, including the Code Council, the study examined the interoperability of software applications and platforms serving the community, as well as future demand, such as automated code checking. Read the report.
 

Canada Announces Certification Program

Code Council Board President Steve Shapiro and Immediate Past President Wally Bailey were in Ottawa for the announcement of Canada’s new certification program for building officials. Alliance of Canadian Building Officials' Associations (ACBOA) President Mannie Withrow awarded the first 14 certifications at the special event. The Canadian Construction Sector Council (CSC) partnered with ACBOA, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and other industry stakeholders to develop national occupational standards and a certification process that measures building officials' qualifications against an approved standard.

Code Council CEO Rick Weiland and Board President Steve Shapiro addressed attendees of the AIA/CSI 2007 Pacific Building Trade Expo in Honolulu, Hawaii, and presented Certificates of Appreciation to the state of Hawaii and Honolulu City and County for their efforts to have the International Codes adopted statewide, and for supporting the creation of a State Building Code Council. Accepting the certificate on behalf of the state was Russ K. Saito, Comptroller with the Department of Accounting and General Services, whose department provides administrative support for the State Building Code Council; and Tim Hiu, Acting Building Division Chief for the City and County of Honolulu.
 

PMG Shares Japanese Common Interests

While in Japan to attend the World Plumbing Council’s 2007 Annual Meeting and Executive Board meeting, Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) Executive Director Jay Peters met with representatives from the Japan Water Works Association (JWWA) to discuss mutual initiatives. JWWA conducts research activities on water supply management, technology, water quality, and inspection and quality certification of products.

Storm Shelters Draft Welcomes Input

During its August 2007 meeting, the ICC/NSSA Consensus Committee on Storm Shelters considered public comments, resulting in several changes to the draft standard. The changes are published in the Third Public Comments Draft Standard on Storm Shelters. Public comments are needed on the text revisions contained in this latest draft standard. Submit comments before the December 31 deadline.

 

ICC Cosponsors Firefighter Education

The first annual Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs (SEAFC)/International Code Council Education Seminar is scheduled for December 10–11. The seminar focuses on the significant changes to the 2006 International Fire Code. An announcement about the seminar was sent to the entire membership of the SEAFC, the largest division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

 
NHA Charts Course for Codes, Standards
 
Among the National Hydrogen Association’s (NHA) top priorities for codes and standards in 2008, the NHA will engage in outreach efforts to increase awareness and understanding of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies among building code officials, fire marshals, and other individuals critical to permitting the implementation of hydrogen and fuel cell equipment. The NHA will also continue its involvement in the Hydrogen Industry Panel on Codes; a joint effort between the International Code Council, the National Fire Protection Association and NHA to harmonize codes and standards for hydrogen technologies. Council Defines Construction Inspector Occupations

The Council reviewed and provided input into the 2008–2009 Occupational Outlook Handbooks, including nature of the work, work environment, education and training, licensure and certification, advancement and employment, job outlook and search tips, and earnings. New Permit Tech Committee Meets

The Ad-Hoc Permit Tech Committee (PTC) held its first meeting this month in St. Louis to review the needs of permit technicians, and how the Code Council can better serve them, especially with training and certification opportunities.
