International Code Council History
2200-1800 B.C. circa—Today's building codes can be traced back to the Code of Hammurabi. The Code of Hammurabi prescribed the execution of any builder whose faulty construction of a dwelling caused the death of its owner.
1625—The first building codes in the United States are established. They address fire safety and specified materials for roof coverings.
1788—The first known formal building code is written in the United States (in German) in Old Salem, (now Winston-Salem) North Carolina.
1972—Council of American Building Officials formed and produces the One and Two Family Dwelling Code
1983—National Building Safety Week is launched.
1994—Three legacy model code organizations, with a combined experience of 190 years plus, create the International Code Council to develop a single set of comprehensive, coordinated model construction codes that could be used throughout the United States and around the world.
1995—The Council publishes its first code, the International Plumbing Code.
1997—Council of American Building Officials is incorporated into the International Code Council.
2002—The three MCOs vote to consolidate business operations.
2003—Presidents and CEOs of the three legacy model code organizations signed documents for the Code Council to begin operations as a single association.
