ICC Commits to Major Capital Investments to Improve Member Service
After a comprehensive 12-month study evaluating the Code Council’s existing office facilities and future needs, the ICC Board of Directors has acted on CEO Rick Weiland’s recommendation and approved the first phase of a Facility Master Plan and $42 million long-term Capital Budget. The plan calls for the acquisition of new office space in the greater Los Angeles, California, and Birmingham, Alabama, areas, as well as renovations to the Chicago District Office in Country Club Hills, Illinois.
The Code Council will use this opportunity to look for business ventures that will diversify revenue streams, add synergy to its business, enhance member service and provide security for members’ equity for the future. The program is being managed by Rives Construction, which will oversee selection, execution and delivery of each project. The second phase of the Master Plan will address the Code Council’s national distribution facility in Lenexa, Kansas, in 2012.
While briefing the ICC Board at its recent meeting in Palm Springs, California, Weiland said the Code Council will be able to fund these capital projects without impacting its minimum liquid reserves (12 percent of operating expenses) unless the Council chooses. Weiland added that each facility will be designed using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system and patterned after the Code Council’s World Headquarters office in Washington, D.C, which is located in a Silver LEED Certified building.
“This represents a tremendous opportunity for the Code Council that will ensure we have the facilities to sustain the strong growth we have experienced over the past five years,” said COO Dominic Sims, who is directing the project. “As preparations move forward, the Council will actively seek input from staff and experts in the industry. Plans for a web page providing up-to-date information on each project are also underway.”
