Code Council Donates Code Books to Schools of Architecture
To help students of architecture better understand the role of codes in building
designs and plans, the Code Council is working with the American Institute of
Architects (AIA) to place a complete set of International Codes (I-Codes)
in the libraries of AIA-accredited schools of architecture. During 2007 Building
Safety Week activities, a donation ceremony was held with representatives from
Howard University, the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. Other area schools
receiving I-Code donations were the University of Maryland, Catholic University
and Morgan State University.
Board of Directors President Wally Bailey, who made the donation program one
of his presidential priorities, said, Though some universities include educational
components about codes, many do not. Our long-term vision is to see the codes
taught in all schools of architecture. My belief is that a more informed design
professional helps us to accomplish our goal of building smarter and safer communities.
Board member Gregori Anderson, a graduate of Howard University, made the presentation
to his alma mater. It is my pleasure to give back to a university that has
given me so much, said Anderson, who made the presentation to Victor Dzidzienyo,
Associate Dean and Director of the School of Architecture and Design.
Board Vice President Steve Shapiro of Hampton, Virginia, made the presentations
to the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Paul Barkley, FAIA and University of Virginia School of Architecture alumnus
said, When I went through school in the 1950s, the codes were a tiny, little
document. Our students study design problems; Id like to see them have code
problems to research and study."
Henry Hollander, Coordinator for Outreach and Alumni Relations at Virginia
Techs Washington/Alexandria Architecture Center, said, Questions always
come up about the codes from students and until now, we didnt have a good
resource to send them to.

Council staff met with architect associates May 1 in Arizona to donate a full
set of International Codes and the ICC/ANSI A117 Standard to the Arizona
State University (ASU) College of Design. Other items discussed included the need
to streamline the permitting process, the Councils SMARTcodes and Interoperability
Project, and opportunities for collaboration on training and education.
