New member named
to California Building Standards Commission. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
appointed Ventura County Fire Department Fire Prevention Officer Christina
Jamison to the CBSC. She has been a member of the Ventura County Fire
Department's Fire Prevention Bureau for 11 years. The California Fire
Chiefs Association, California Building Industry Association and California
Building Officials supported Jamison's nomination.
Government stays neutral on green rating systems. The U.S. government
has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) committing 17 federal agencies
and the office of the president to neutrality in the use of any one green
building rating system. As part of the agreement, agencies will adhere
to specific guiding principles in the areas of design, energy, materials
and indoor air quality, among others. The General Services Administration
(GSA) has also commissioned a study to be conducted by the Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
to study alternate rating systems. The ICC Industry Advisory Committee
(IAC) has completed its study on sustainability and the I-Codes. This
report will form the basis of future ICC activities in this subject area.
IAPMO celebrates 80th anniversary. What began during a coffee
break with a small group of plumbing inspectors in 1926 has led to the
International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO)
celebrating its 80th year. As part of the festivities, IAPMO has unveiled
a new Web site, logo and publications and has special events planned to
commemorate the anniversary. Click

Experts call for better glass in Florida condos. With the same
weak glass replacing many windows that were shattered by Hurricane Wilma
six months ago, some engineers and building officials in Miami-Dade and
Broward counties are calling for mandatory upgrades for older buildings.
But opponents say requiring upgraded windows would be unprecedented, send
repair costs skyrocketing and create even more delays in repairing vulnerable
buildings before the next hurricane season begins in June. Click

Alabama Governor signs Good Samaritan Law. The legislation allows
construction volunteers to help in storm-struck areas without fear that
their companies will be liable for on-the-job accidents. The Good Samaritan
Law for the Construction Industry increases the number of volunteer first
responders in an emergency. It was supported by the Alabama Construction
Industry Coalition.

Building
Safety Week Events Underway
Building
Safety Week 2006 kicked off this week to recognize the importance of making
homes and buildings safe places where people can live, work and play.
Sponsored by the International Code Council Foundation, Building Safety
Week was first observed in 1980.
The
theme of Building Safety Week 2006, "Building a Safer World Together,"
reflects the importance of getting everyone involved in the prevention
of safety and security hazards. A number of ICC events have been held
this week, including the Silent Defenders Awards Dinner and the national
rollout breakfast for Project H.E.R.O. Click

ICC and the International
Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) have reached tentative
agreement on certain key elements of a venture to jointly develop one plumbing
code and one mechanical code for use by the entire nation.
Both
organizations intend to hold meetings throughout the country educating their
members about the benefits of the new relationship. Click

ICC
Forms Partnership with ASCE
Under the agreement, ICC will offer six American Society of Civil Engineers
(ASCE) training Web casts to ICC members at ASCE member prices. The topics
for the six Web casts are Snow Load Provisions in ASCE-7-05; Wind and
Seismic Retrofit of Buildings; Writing: Producing Action-Oriented Documents
Parts I and II; Facilitating Action-Oriented Meetings; and Personal Time
Management: Work Smarter, Not Harder. The courses include ICC CEUs.

In its continuing sponsorship
of the Center for Campus Fire Safety, (CCFS), ICC presented a check for
$5,000 to the Center at the 19th Annual Congressional Fire Services Institute.
The Center has marshaled national fire service organizations to raise awareness
of fire risks on America's college campuses.
The
Center's coalition of interests, including ICC, is currently at work in
Congress to promote adoption of the Campus Fire Safety Right-to-Know Act—adopted
by the U.S. House of Representatives as an amendment to the reauthorization
of the Higher Education Act—under consideration in the Senate as S.2493.
Weiland
Named to FLASH Board

Weiland |
ICC COO Rick Weiland
has been named to the Board of Directors for the Federal Alliance for
Safe Homes (FLASH). "Not only are we delighted to have Mr. Weiland because
of his talent and experience, we believe his appointment will continue to
strengthen our partnership with ICC," said FLASH President and CEO Leslie
Chapman-Henderson. Weiland said he looks forward to working with FLASH to
address important building safety issues. He also acknowledged that the
increase in natural and man-made disasters has made it imperative that organizations
like FLASH and ICC work more closely in an effort to educate the public,
ease the effects of disasters on communities, and better protect lives and
property.
Sealy
Presented NIBS 2005 Member Award
Jim Sealy, a long-time ICC supporter and former Bobby J. Fowler Award
honoree, is the recipient of the National Institute of Building Sciences
(NIBS) 2005 Member Award. Noting his pioneering contributions to performance-based
design to improve accessibility and safety, NIBS recognized Sealy for
his exceptional volunteer activity in public and private codes and standards
programs such as ICC.
Also,
ICC Board Director Tim Ryan was installed as one of three new members
to the NIBS Board of Directors.

ICC listed in NTTAA
anniversary publication. In recognition of the 10th anniversary of
the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act (NTTAA), ICC is among
the 30 standards-developing organizations, federal agencies and companies
featured in a booklet published by the Standards Engineering Society (SES)
that illustrates the positive impact of the NTTAA so far. The NTTAA requires
that all federal agencies use standards developed by voluntary consensus
standards bodies instead of government-unique standards wherever possible.
Perhaps even more importantly, the Act includes provisions that encourage
federal agencies to partner with the private sector in the development
of standards, which not only helps improve the efficiency and effectiveness
of government, but strengthens the U.S. position in the global marketplace.
New job posting
site implemented. To better serve members and customers, ICC has partnered
with JobTarget to post online job openings and opportunities. This new
job posting board will open up a variety of new features. In addition
to reaching a wider audience, the site features the ability to contact
prospective candidates, post resumes and participate in job searches.
Job postings for ICC members are still free as part of member benefits.
ICC goes high-tech with conference registration.
Meeting and Travel Services and Exhibit Services are using a new software
program to manage all Annual Conference and Expo registrations. The conference
registration management software, eShow2000, allows attendees and vendors
to register and pay for events online. eShow2000 will help ICC manage
conference-related records and will streamline conferencerelated procedures.
Registration will begin within a few weeks and will include a new conference
Web site, customized by eShow2000, with the look and feel of the conference
theme.
