Building safety group silent auction will aid local residents

Long after members and guests attending the International Code Council Annual Conference wrap up their business and check out of the Opryland Hotel, Nashville and Davidson County residents will benefit.

A silent auction during the September ICC conference will raise funds for Parachutes, a local, nonprofit organization that identifies potential hazards and implements safety measures. Parachutes serves people who are physically or financially challenged. Representatives of the organization are contacting local businesses and individuals seeking donations for the auction.

"Our goal is to raise awareness regarding conditions that could predispose our citizens to risk within the home and immediate environment," said Parachutes Director Mary Carter. "We look forward to establishing partnerships with area businesses that can help our efforts. We encourage support for the ICC silent auction in September and future collaborative efforts."

Funds raised from the silent auction will go toward testing and purchasing replacement batteries for smoke detectors, fire extinguisher replacement and education, inspection of furnaces and other fuel burning appliances, carbon monoxide detectors and radon detection.

"ICC members want to make a lasting, positive impact on local communities that host our annual conference," said ICC Manager of Meeting Services Heather Miller. "We partner with a charitable organization that has a mission related to ICC's commitment to public safety. This is our first attempt. We expect it to become an ICC tradition. Our members like to help others."

The ICC, a 50,000-member association dedicated to building safety, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. The majority of U.S. cities, counties and states that adopt codes choose building safety and fire prevention codes developed by the ICC, including Nashville, Davidson County and other Tennessee jurisdictions.

For more information about donating items to the silent auction that will benefit area residents, contact Parachutes at (615) 227-6403, or ICC at 1-800-214-4321, ext. 252.
