The Code Official Institute, cosponsored by the Building Officials Association of Florida, is a must-attend event for code enforcement department administrators who want to improve administrative skills and become exceptional in their public service career. Professionals planning to take the ICC Certified Building Official Examination also will benefit by attending the institute.

The four-day institute, October 19–22 in Orlando, Florida, focuses on legal aspects of code administration, financial management, ethics and the code profession, effective communication skills and personnel management. The institute features expert authorities and an interactive format between session leaders and attendees.

The registration fee for the Code Official Institute, $499 for ICC members and $599 for nonmembers, includes instructional materials, continental breakfast, lunches and break refreshments. A 15% group discount applies if three or more institute registrations are received at the same time from the same organization, jurisdiction, or company.

For lodging, contact the Adams Mark Orlando Hotel, 1-800-444-2326. Be sure to ask for the special ICC rate of $99 per night plus tax. To register for the Code Official Institute, visit www.iccsafe.org/training. For more information, call 1- 800-214-4321, ext. 328.

Other educational offerings from ICC slated for this fall include three new Audio Virtual Seminars. These seminars provide access to training via a speaker phone. AVS include handouts and question-and-answer periods to provide the learner with a thorough understanding of each topic. One low registration fee, $175, pays for an unlimited number of participants at one location. The phone call to connect to an AVS is toll-free.

"Preventing Tragedies—Design and Inspection of Porches and Balconies," Oct. 1 (register by Sept. 24) is based on the 2003 International Existing Building Code and the 2003 International Building Code. The seminar addresses technical and administrative aspects of porches and balconies.

"Fire Series—Means of Egress Issues in Existing Buildings," Nov. 5 (register by Oct. 29) explores egress as it applies to existing buildings, common means of egress violations in existing buildings and issues specific to assembly use groups.

"Fire Series—Interior Finish Considerations in Existing Buildings," Nov. 19 (register by Nov.12) is based on the 2003 International Fire Code and 2003 International Existing Building Code. The seminar looks at fire inspection issues related to interior finishes, decorative materials and furnishings.

To register for AVS, log onto www.iccsafe.org and click on the "training" button or call 1-800-214-4321, ext. 329.

The ICC, a 50,000-member association dedicated to building safety, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. The majority of U.S. cities, counties and states that adopt codes choose building safety and fire prevention codes developed by the ICC.
