ICC Extends Sympathies to Tornado Victims, Continues
Work on Completing FEMA-sponsored Storm Shelter Standard
We wish to express our deepest sympathy upon the tragic deaths and injuries
caused by recent tornadoes and violent weather in the Midwestern and Southern
United States. In an effort to prevent such tragedies, the ICC is working
in cooperation with the National Storm Shelter Association and FEMA, now
the Office of Homeland Security, to develop the storm shelter standard.
The ICC Consensus Committee on Storm Shelters was established to help
make communities safer from these unfortunate events. This committee is
primarily responsible for minimum requirements to safeguard the public
health, safety and general welfare through design, construction, and installation
requirements for storm shelters. The requirements contained in the International
Codes pertaining to these situations shall be incorporated into the standards
developed by the committee. The ICC Consensus Committee on Storm Shelters
recently met on May 1 and 2.
The ICC will continue working to identify new ways to make our great
nation and the world a safer place for everyone.
